The Office of the General Counsel seeks an attorney to join the legal team for the fifteen Massachusetts Community Colleges. Working in a collegial and dynamic legal environment, the attorney will be responsible for system-wide and college-specific legal matters as well as state and federal legal and policy compliance for public higher education institutions (ex. FMLA/PFML, Accommodations, Discrimination, Title IX, Worker’s Compensation, Wage and Hour, Unemployment, State Ethics, Public Records, Open Meeting Law, Data Breach).  The attorney will provide daily legal advice and counsel to senior administrators and Presidents on a range of legal areas with a primary focus on employee issues, assist in formulating policies and procedures, review and draft contracts and settlement agreements, prepare legal advisories and memoranda, facilitate and conduct  legal training, represent the Colleges before state and federal agencies (ex. MCAD, EEOC), serve as litigation liaison to coordinate and assist with lawsuits handled by the Attorney General’s Office, and work with and maintain positive relationships with higher education stakeholders, including the Department of Higher Education, and the Comptroller’s Office, among others.  This Non-Unit Professional position offers a competitive state salary, benefits, and title consistent with background and experience. The successful candidate must be a Massachusetts Bar member in good standing with excellent writing, research, organizational, and interpersonal skills; strong legal reasoning, analytical, and problem-solving abilities; capacity to articulate legal concepts and complex issues to a variety of audiences; ability to work autonomously, take feedback and direction as needed, exercise considerable judgment and discretion; and demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Minimum requirement of five years of experience as a licensed attorney and preferably in two or more of the following legal areas: Education, Employment, Labor, Discrimination, and/or Disability.  Applications will be reviewed upon receipt with preferred start as soon as possible but no later than Summer 2024.
