General Summary
Assist General Counsel in administering and coordinating the delivery of legal services for the University.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist General Counsel in administering institutional legal affairs across the university campus.
- Assist general counsel and associate general counsel in reviewing, drafting, and approving university contracts and institutional policies and procedures.
- Negotiate, finalize, and organize affiliation agreements on behalf of the University in concert with relevant university academic divisions.
- Act as Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Coordinator for the University, including the evaluation of requests, communication with requesters and any relevant University personnel; and timely review, compilation, and production of University responses.
- Prepare University responses to document subpoenas and other administrative requests.
- Provide legal counseling and assistance to various University departments in all aspects of business and higher education law.
- Conduct thorough legal research and write cogent legal opinions as assigned.
- Represent the University in judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings on the University’s behalf as assigned.
- Perform related departmental duties as required and/or assigned by the General Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications:
A law degree and admission to the Michigan Bar is required.
A minimum of three years of experience in active legal practice is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in litigation, contract negotiation, and business-related matters is preferred.
Previous higher education experience is desirable.
