Position Overview:

The Vice President and General Counsel is the chief legal officer for Duke University, a world-class research institution with an affiliated academic medical center and major Division I (“D-I”) athletics program. Reporting to the President of Duke University, the Vice President and General Counsel serves as a key member of the President’s Cabinet with overall responsibility for the vision, leadership, and execution of the University’s legal strategy. The Vice President and General Counsel provides advice and broad counsel to the President and University leadership, the Duke Board of Trustees, Duke University, and the Duke University Health System on all significant legal matters and is consulted on key policy and issues affecting Duke. The Vice President and General Counsel is also responsible for leading and managing the University’s Office of Counsel.

Experience:

The successful candidate will have at least 15 years of legal experience, with a deep understanding of the complex legal issues facing a decentralized research institution with a Division I college athletics program and an academic medical center. Candidates will have extensive experience interacting with senior executives and governing boards with varied interests and areas of responsibility. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and strategic leader, who has the proven ability to lead a large and diverse team. Experience in higher education is strongly preferred, as is experience handling and managing complex litigation matters.
