Job Purpose      

This position will report to the General Counsel and be responsible for providing legal advice and opinions to various academic and administrative offices. The primary duties of this position include Student Affairs, Title IX, and institutional policy drafting and review. Other duties include providing counsel to various units and departments of the university, advising on internal investigations and risk assessments, and conducting legal research on complex issues.

Essential Functions        

Provide legal advice on a wide variety of matters that arise at the University under the general supervision of General Counsel. Serving as counsel to the President and the Board of Trustees as directed by General Counsel. Consults with and advise faculty, staff, and administrators on legal matters as directed by General Counsel. Frequently interact with students, faculty, staff, and persons doing business with the University. Assist in formulating, implementing, interpreting, and reviewing rules, policies, practices, guidelines, and procedures for faculty, staff, and students. Research legal issues and draft reports and memoranda for the General Counsel and others as directed. Assist in reviewing, interpreting, and advising on all applicable state and federal laws.

Minimum Qualifications             

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school; Tennessee law license or eligibility for Tennessee license; at least three (3) years of experience in a law firm, or a corporate, higher education, or government legal office. Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, diplomatic, and oral and written communication skills; ability to prioritize tasks and work independently in a highly collegial and high-performing environment; pragmatic and objective acumen with ability to recognize the broader consequences of legal advice; ability to perceive and explain to non-lawyers the practical application of law and policy in complex situations; initiative and intellectual curiosity.

Preferred Qualifications              

More than five (5) years of experience in the practice of law; higher education experience.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: Paygrade AD52, with salary negotiable, within budgetary parameters, based on qualifications and experience.
