CEO Corner Volume 137

One DosunmuDear Colleagues,

The 2023 NACUA Annual Conference is right around the corner, and it is, indeed, shaping up to be bigger, bolder, and better than ever! We are excited to welcome you to Chicago to learn, to fellowship with one another, and to meet new colleagues. With over 95 sessions and discussion groups, 795 CLE minutes, nine program tracks, and over 250 expert presenters, there is something for everyone.

This year’s Annual Conference will feature some perennial favorites, such as a Supreme Court Update from Dean Erwin Chemerinsky—this time as our Opening Plenary session. And we have made a few tweaks to the program that we think everyone will appreciate, including our first ever Closing Plenary session featuring Lisa Brown, General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education. These two sessions bookend our featured session, which will include a number of NACUA colleagues working through a hypothetical crisis communications scenario. We’re also bringing back our very popular Preconference programming, which includes our excellent, in-person Lawyers New to Higher Education Workshop and General Counsel Roundtables.

If you haven’t registered, you may do so here. As a reminder, if you or a colleague you know is facing financial hardship, remember that we offer two scholarships – keep reading to learn more.

The Kathleen Santora Scholarship for Lawyers New to Higher Education is available for to up to two eligible attorneys new to higher education, with a preference given to those with demonstrated resource constraints. Members from small colleges, community colleges, minority serving institutions, and religious institutions who would not otherwise be able to participate in the LNHE course are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, members must have fewer than two years in higher education legal practice (though not necessarily in the practice of law generally). The recipients of the Kathleen Santora Scholarship will receive complimentary registration to the in-person, pre-conference Lawyers New to Higher Education Workshop and two nights’ hotel accommodations at an Annual Conference hotel as well as support for travel costs.

The Grier Program recognizes the importance of new members while promoting the importance of their continued educational development by providing up to two complimentary registrations to the Annual Conference, Recipients of the Grier Program must be a Primary Representative of a NACUA Institutional Member who has not attended any NACUA educational programming, nor have any of the representatives on the institution’s roster.  The member(s) selected may not have been a member for more than three years and ideally, would not otherwise be able to attend the Annual Conference. The Grier Program only covers only the cost of annual conference registration, and does not include the pre-conference events, hotel, or travel and recipients must attend the entire Annual Conference.

If you or someone you know is interested in being considered for either the Kathleen Santora Scholarship or the Grier Program or both, please send a brief email to nacua@nacua.org and we will provide you with further information.

I look forward to seeing you in Chicago!
