Timothy G. Lynch Begins Term as Chair of National Association of College and University Attorneys’ Board of Directors

(Washington, D.C.) Timothy G. Lynch, Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Michigan, has begun his term as Chair of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) Board of Directors effective June 25, 2025. Elected to the office of chair-elect  in May 2024, he will serve until July 1, 2026. 

A deeply committed and engaged volunteer leader, Mr. Lynch previously served as a member of the Board of Directors from 2016-2018 and 2024-2025 . He has also held leadership positions   on the Committee on Finance and Audit, the Committee on Program for Annual Conference, and the Committee on Legal Education.  
In recognition of his significantly innovative contributions and outstanding service to the NACUA and to the practice of higher education law, he was awarded the First Decade Award in 2023. 

Since 2013, Mr. Lynch has served as the Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Michigan. He joined the university from the U.S. Department of Energy, where he served as Acting General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel for Litigation and Enforcement.

Mr. Lynch has led a varied career in private practice, government service, and higher education. He was an attorney at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Shea & Gardner prior to his government service. He has clerked in Detroit for Judge Cornelia G. Kennedy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He served for seven years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where he was a senior prosecutor in the Fraud and Public Corruption Section.  

A respected educator, Mr. Lynch is an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law School. He has also served as lecturer at the University of Virginia Law School and as adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he was also Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Law Journal. He is a frequent presenter on higher education legal issues and Mr. Lynch has presented at a number of NACUA events and for the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

Mr. Lynch is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, where he received his Juris Doctorate.
