NACUA's Life Membership Award

George M. Shur - 2003

After nearly 30 years of service, George Shur retired as General Counsel to Northern Illinois University on December 31, 2002. For 10 years prior to his joining the legal counsel’s office, he was a partner with the Portland, Maine law firm, Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson. Mr. Shur received his B.A. from Colby College and his J.D. from Boston University School of Law.

Mr. Shur’s career at Northern Illinois and as a member of NACUA have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues from all corners of the country. He has served on numerous committees during his long tenure, including a term as founding Chair of the Committee on Continuing Legal Education. He also chaired the Committees on Membership, Site Selection, Program for the Annual Conference, Bylaws, Nominations, and Honors and Awards. He was first elected to the Board of Directors, as a member-at-large, in 1974 and again in 1983. In 1985, he was elected Second Vice President, serving successively as First Vice President in 1986-1987, President-Elect in 1987-1988, and as the 28th President of the Association in 1988-1989.

Mr. Shur has spoken and written extensively on a wide range of issues, especially those relating to students and student affairs. Those who know him know that he has been a valued and valuable member of NACUA and of the higher education law profession.

NACUA is therefore pleased to present George Shur with Life Membership in recognition of his extraordinary service to both Northern Illinois University and to the Association.
