NACUA's Life Membership Award

Byron H. Higgins - 1999

Mr. Higgins retired in 1997, having served as a higher education attorney, in one capacity or another, for more than 30 years. Following graduation from law school in 1962, he served as Assistant to the University Attorney in the Office of the Provost at Wayne State University and as an instructor at the Law School. He became University Attorney in 1967 and General Counsel in 1973. In 1978, Mr. Higgins became Associate General Counsel of Michigan State University, and in 1984, was appointed University Counsel for the University of Illinois.

Mr. Higgins was a member of the NACUA Board of Directors from 1991-96. He served two years as a member-at-large and three years as Treasurer and Chair of the Committee on Finance. He was a member of numerous other NACUA Committees: Arrangements (Chair, 1991-92), Expense Reimbursement (Chair, 1992-93), Honors and Awards, Nominations, Program, Services to Small Colleges, and Site Selection. He was an active participant in NACUA Sections on Affirmative Action and Personnel and Retirement. Between 1980 and 1996, he attended all but one annual conference, often serving as either a speaker or discussion leader.

NACUA is pleased to recognize Mr. Higgins for his valuable contributions to the Association and to bestow on him Life Membership in the Association.
