NACUA's First Decade Award

Janet P. Judge - 2012

Janet P. Judge is President of Sports Law Associates LLC, where she brings her legal and diverse collegiate athletic experiences to the table when advising and representing colleges and universities on a wide variety of employment and sports related issues. In addition to her law practice, Janet is also an NCAA speaker and trainer. She is the co-author of the recently released NCAA Manual on Title IX and of the NCAA News bi-weekly column "Gender Equity Q & As," and is also on the editorial board of College Athletics and the Law. Janet's publications include a number of articles and chapters on collegiate compliance. In 2011, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named her Administrator of the Year for Athletic Organizations.

A graduate of Harvard College, Janet served as Vice-Chair on its athletics oversight committee. Upon graduation from Boston University School of Law, she clerked for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl, United States Court of Appeals. Janet has been an active member of NACUA since 2004. During her first ten years of membership, she has spoken at numerous CLE Workshops and Annual Conferences. In addition, for the past two years, she has served as one of the instructors for the highly successful NACUA online course for Title IX coordinators; this course is now in its fifth running, and the number of course participants has exceeded over 1,100 individuals across the U.S.

Janet's NACUA colleagues have stated that she is considered "the" expert on athletic equity both within NACUA and nationally. She balances her commitment to equity in athletics with a commonsense approach that both understands and respects the challenges NACUA member institutions face in this area of compliance. Her contributions to NACUA during her first ten years of membership are all the more significant because she has no additional lawyers in her practice. In addition, Janet models NACUA's core values of collaboration and collegiality, all with a marvelous sense of humor.

NACUA is pleased to recognize Janet P. Judge as the recipient of this year's First Decade Award for her outstanding service to the Association and to the practice of higher education law during her first ten years of membership.
