NACUA's Distinguished Service Award

Lucien "Skip" Capone - 2010

Lucien “Skip” Capone II is university counsel with the University of North Carolina at Asheville and has held that position since April of 2010. Prior to that he was the university counsel at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from 1991 until his move to Asheville. From 1977-1991 he was employed by the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and was special deputy attorney general in charge of the Corrections Section from 1987-1991.

He received his B.A. degree from North Carolina State University in 1973 and his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1977. He became a member of the North Carolina Bar Association shortly after joining the Attorney General’s Office and has been a member of the Appellate Rules Committee for several years. He has served as a public member on two accreditation boards, CACREP from 1995-2001 and ACOTE from 2003-2006.

Skip is a certified flight instructor and served as a Navy Reservist in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1982-2002. He served on active duty during Desert Storm and retired as a Commander. He has also served on a number of UNC General Administration Committees and Task Forces, including a period as Chair of the Computer and Internet Legal Issues Committee (CILIC) in the late 1990s, and as a member of the UNC Campus Safety Task Force in 2004. Skip received the North Carolina Bar Association Citizen Lawyer award in 2008.

Skip joined NACUA in 1991, and then served on its Board of Directors from 1999–2002. He also served on numerous NACUA committees, including: the Committee on Board Operations (Chair), Committee on Web Legal Resources, Committee on Program for Annual Conference, Committee on Strategic Planning, Committee on Honors and Awards (Vice Chair), Committee on Nominations and Elections, Committee on Finance and Audit, Committee on Information Services (Co-Chair), Committee on Continuing Legal Education, Committee on Membership and Member Services, and the Committee on Site Selection. He has also been active at NACUA educational programs where he served as a speaker, moderator and discussion leader at over 14 events since 1996.

Those who have come to know Skip have had the chance to experience, among other NACUA values, his civility and collegiality, infused with warmth and wit. Skip is the personification of NACUA volunteer service to his colleagues.

NACUA is pleased to recognize Skip Capone as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding and exemplary service to the Association, most especially for his service to the Board of Directors.
