Speaker Biographies

Art Coleman Headshot
Art Coleman is a managing partner and co-founder of EducationCounsel LLC, one of the preeminent education policy, law, and strategy firms in the United States. In that capacity, Mr. Coleman leads the legal and policy work of the College Board's Access and Diversity Collaborative, and was a principal author of the briefs filed by the College Board and other education organizations in the U.S. Supreme Court case regarding race-conscious admissions practices, Fisher v. University of Texas.

Mr. Coleman served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights during the Clinton Administration. He is a 1984 honors graduate of Duke University School of Law and a 1981 Phi Beta Kappa and honors graduate of the University of Virginia.  He has testified before the U.S. Senate and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; he has served as an adjunct professor of two law schools and one graduate school of education; and he has spoken widely and published extensively regarding legal and policy issues in education—with a focus on major reform issues of the day.

Mr. Coleman is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Higher Education Policy; he is also a current member of the Board of Directors of GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network); and of the Lab School of Washington. 

Shannon Gundy Headshot
Shannon Gundy is Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland where she began as an Admission Counselor in 1990.  Passionate about helping students to navigate the college admission process, she has served in a variety of capacities in Maryland's admission office.  Currently she oversees the freshman, transfer, and international student admission processes as well as Enrollment Management Marketing and Strategic Communications.

A graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., she began her career in college admissions as an Admission Counselor at College of Notre Dame of Maryland.  In addition to her role in Enrollment Management, Shannon also:
  • serves as a member of the International Baccalaureate College and University Task Force,
  • serves as a member of the Maryland/Delaware/District of Columbia ACT Council, and
  • serves as a faculty member for the AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers) Admissions Counselor-Recruiter professional development course.

Committed to issues of access in college admission, Shannon is particularly interested in serving traditionally underrepresented students as they work to pursue higher education.

Alexandra Schimmer Headshot
Alexandra Schimmer is the Deputy General Counsel for The Ohio State University where she leads the provision of legal counsel for the academic areas of the University, including faculty, research, student life, and policy issues, and oversees the university’s litigation and labor and employment legal work, and serves on a range of strategic, business, and risk management teams.  Her areas of focus include governance, compliance (including Title IX, Clery Act, and disability law issues), diversity in admissions and employment, campus speech, investigations, research regulatory and enterprise issues, academic collaborations and international matters, conflicts of interest and public law issues, intellectual property, campus safety, and issues relating to museums, libraries, and athletic programs.  Prior to joining Ohio State, Schimmer was the Solicitor General for the State of Ohio, where she conducted the state’s major appeals, both civil and criminal, in the U.S. Supreme Court and other state and federal courts, and advised state officials and agencies, including all of Ohio’s public colleges and universities, on a range of constitutional, regulatory, and other legal matters.  Before joining the Attorney General’s office, Schimmer was a litigator at a large law firm in Columbus, Ohio.  For ten years, Schimmer has served by appointment of Ohio’s recent Governors as Ohio Commissioner to the Uniform Law Commission, which drafts model legislation designed to address issues common to all the states.  Schimmer is a summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton University, received her J.D. from the Yale Law School, and prior to law school, was a Fulbright Fellow at Cambridge University in England.
