Sponsored Research and Technology Transfer:  Moving Forward in a Time of Global Challenge

Registration Fee: $399

2020 is undeniably the year that higher education attorneys added “geopolitical strategist” to their skillset.  Amid a global pandemic and multi-faceted concerns over foreign involvement in university research activities, college and university counsel have been called to advise on issues that pose monumental challenges for the higher education research enterprise. Yet, solving these issues can open the door to unparalleled advancements, invaluable collaborations, and a renewal of the higher education research mission.  All of this has occurred at dizzying speed alongside routine and newly developing compliance, regulatory, and funding requirements as well as significant political and regulatory focus on “foreign influence” in U.S. research.

This comprehensive and easily-accessible virtual CLE Workshop is the essential legal update for college and university counsel and administrators with responsibility for sponsored research, intellectual property advising, and technology transfer. The Workshop will provide need-to-know and practical information to remain resilient and successfully navigate university research operations during this time of rapid change and increased service to clients.  Workshop sessions will cover a range of important topics such as:

  • Control Over Intellectual Property in the Age of COVID-19
  • Regulatory Developments and Liability for Health-Related Research Activities
  • Grants and Funding Compliance in the Unfolding of Research During and After COVID
  • Ethical Issues and Conflicts of Interest in Procurement and Research
  • False Claims Act Enforcement
  • Foreign Influence
  • Export Controls, Trademark, Copyright, and Cross-Border Collaborations
  • Research Administration and Clinical Trials
  • Fostering and Managing University Start-Ups
  • And more!

In addition to virtual panel sessions with an opportunity for live Q&A with the presenters, virtual discussion groups will allow participants to exchange ideas, pose questions, and share experiences and solutions on myriad important topics with colleagues in an informal setting.

Please join us this November from anywhere you find yourself with an internet connection to come together and learn the latest legal developments and approaches from experts and discuss areas of common concern with your colleagues!

Who Should Attend?

This workshop will be presented at the intermediate to advanced level. It is designed for college and university counsel responsible for research, technology transfer, and intellectual property matters, as well as administrators with significant responsibilities in these areas.  Presenters will presume attendees have some familiarity and experience with foundational legal principles in academic research, contracts, and intellectual property. Note: Unlike our webinars, workshops are not to be shared.  If other administrators on your campus are interested in attending, they need to register and pay to attend.
