Estelle A. Fishbein - 2004

Estelle A. Fishbein retired from Johns Hopkins University in January 2004 after serving as General Counsel since 1975 and General Counsel and Vice President since 1991. Prior to that, she served as Special Assistant Attorney General for the University of Maryland, and as Senior Staff Attorney, Office of General Counsel, Health Insurance Division (Medicare), United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Hunter College and her L.L.B. from Yale Law School.

During her 30-year tenure at Johns Hopkins, Ms. Fishbein also served as a trustee of the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association, as a board member and Chair of the Medical Centre Insurance Co., Ltd., a member of the Advisory Committee on Scientific Integrity of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and a trustee of Lafayette College.

Ms. Fishbein’s leadership in NACUA is equally impressive. She first joined the NACUA Board of Directors in 1971. She was elected Treasurer in 1973 and Second Vice President in 1977. She assumed the presidency in 1980-81, the first woman in the history of the association to do so. In the intervening years, she was a member of nearly every NACUA Committee, serving as Chair of Arrangements, Honors and Awards, Membership, National Office, Nominations, Program, and Publications.

Those who know Estelle Fishbein know that she has been a valued and valuable member of NACUA and of the higher education law profession. NACUA is therefore pleased to present her with Life Membership in recognition of her extraordinary service to both Johns Hopkins University and the Association.
