NACUA's Distinguished Service Award

S. Andrew Schaffer - 2003

As Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the University, S. Andrew Schaffer is the chief legal officer at New York University, a position he has held for more than 25 years. He previously served as Counsel to Stanley S. Arkin, P.C., Chief Counsel of the New York State Moreland Act Commission on Nursing Homes, Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Associate Director of the Vera Institute of Justice. Mr. Schaffer received his B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard University and his LL.B. cum laude from Harvard Law School. He also was a Henry Fellow at Cambridge University.

Mr. Schaffer’s involvement in NACUA spans nearly as long as his tenure at NYU. His first volunteer position was on the 1979-1980 Committee on Publications, and since then, he has served on virtually every NACUA committee and countless task forces and ad-hoc committees. He has been Chair of Committee on National Office, Finance, Program for the Annual Conference, Nominations and Elections, and Honors and Awards, and the Ad-Hoc Committee on Early Retirement.
