NACUA's Distinguished Service Award

Gerald (Jerry) Woods - 2009

Gerald (Jerry) W. Woods has served as a higher education attorney since 1973. He has provided legal services to the University System of Georgia for thirty-five years, first in the System’s central office and then at the Medical College of Georgia where in 2001 he retired as Vice President for Business Operations and Legal Advisor to the President (a title he now holds emeritus). Since 2001, he has been in private practice, continuing to provide legal services to University System institutions and their affiliated nonprofits. 

Jerry has been a member of NACUA since 1973 and has attended every annual conference since 1974. He served as Treasurer of NACUA from 2005 to 2008. He also served on the Board of Directors from 1983 to 1986, as a Member-at-Large. He has served as Chair of many NACUA committees, including of the Committee on Finance and Audit, Committee on Site Selection, Committee on Articles and Bylaws, Committee on the Program for the Annual Conference, the Committee on Nominations and Elections and the Committee on Strategic Planning. In addition, Jerry has served as a member of the Committee on Membership and Member Services, Committee on Honors and Awards, Committee on Professional Development, and the Editorial Board of The Journal of College and University Law. He has also chaired or served on several special subcommittees and task forces. 

He co-authored the JCUL article “Bradley Center, Inc., V. Wessner: The Psychotherapist's Duty to Protect," and he has been a speaker at numerous NACUA annual conferences and continuing legal education programs. 

NACUA is pleased to award Jerry Woods as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding and exemplary service to the Association, most especially for his ongoing commitment to NACUA service through his extensive Board and Committee involvement, and for his distinguished services as Treasurer.
