The Ethical Obligations of Lawyers on Campus

An increasing number of attorneys are drawn to college campuses to jobs that are not necessarily a part of the General Counsel’s Office.  NACUA member attorneys work as contract administrators, Title IX coordinators, compliance auditors, faculty members, Human Resources personnel, and in many other areas of university life. The Model Rules of Professional Conduct impose varying ethical obligations on attorneys who represent the university and attorneys working in other capacities for the university.  This webinar will explore those differences, all the while looking at how lawyers on campus can partner to build legally-compliant communities that carry out the university’s mission.

Topics will include:

  • The role of the university attorney and attorney administrators in various business aspects of university operations,
  • The parameters of attorney-client privilege,
  • Unauthorized practice of law and dispensation of casual legal advice, and
  • University employees as represented parties.

This webinar will be of interest to university employees, both inside and outside of the General Counsel’s office, who have a Juris Doctor or are otherwise licensed to practice law in any jurisdiction.
