Speaker Biographies

MJ Dively cropped photoMary Jo Dively is Vice President and General Counsel for Carnegie Mellon University, where she oversees the wide range of legal issues involving the University in Pennsylvania, nationally and at its many international campuses. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, she was in the private practice of law for nineteen years, most recently as partner in the national law firm, Reed Smith, as head of its Technology, Media and Communications Group. Mrs. Dively received her B.A. and B.S. from the University of Kansas and her J.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. She is a member of the American Law Institute; is one of Pennsylvania's appointed Commissioners to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws; Within her local community, Mrs. Dively is a current member and past Chair of the Board of Trustees of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the UPMC Health System; Shady Side Academy, the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; and the Frick Art & Historical Center, Inc. Mrs. Dively and her husband, Lane, are the parents of triplet boys who are currently juniors at Carnegie Mellon University.


 

Mary Ann Blair  Mary Ann Blair is the Director of Information Security at Carnegie Mellon University. Working with an outstanding team of information security professionals, she is responsible for the university's information security program, identity and access management services, and disaster recovery and business continuity services. Prior to establishing the Information Security Office in 2004, Mary Ann served as Director of Administrative Computing at Carnegie Mellon, leading various applications development, systems integration, and systems maintenance projects over a fifteen year period. Before joining Carnegie Mellon, Mary Ann served as the Director of Data Management at the University of Pittsburgh's Epidemiology Data Center responsible for systems and services to support national, multi-center research efforts.

Mary Ann is active in EDUCAUSE and its partner programs. She has served in numerous capacities including: EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Security Task Force; Program Committee for the Annual and Security Professionals Conferences; and CUMREC Board of Directors. She holds a B.S. in Psychology/Philosophy and an M.S. in Information Science, both from the University of Pittsburgh and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). In her spare time, Mary Ann is active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as activities coordinator for her son's local troop.


Heidi Wachs

Heidi L. Wachs is a member of Jenner & Block's Privacy and Information Governance Practice.  A nationally recognized leader in privacy, breach response and data security compliance, her wealth of experience includes serving as a privacy researcher and as chief privacy officer of a major university.  Clients seek her counsel in data breach handling and recovery, information classification, information security and identity governance and administration. Ms. Wachs is a certified information privacy professional. Ms. Wachs joined Jenner & Block after serving as an analyst for the identity and privacy strategies team with Gartner for Technical Professionals from 2012 to 2014.  At Gartner, she researched, published and presented on issues of privacy and technology.  Prior to her work as an analyst, Ms. Wachs founded and developed Georgetown University’s privacy program, serving as the university’s first chief privacy officer and director of IT policy from 2007-2012, and is recognized as a national leader on education privacy issues.  Before serving at Georgetown, she was a government relations officer with EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to promote the intelligent use of information technology in higher education.
