Campus Law Enforcement: Responding to a Changing Environment

Campus law enforcement faces increasing demands as a result of the changing expectations of students, faculty, staff, visitors and the surrounding communities regarding campus safety, guns on campus and the role campuses should play in their surrounding communities.

The number of colleges and universities with sworn campus police officers continues its upward trend. Campus law enforcement departments range greatly in size.  In addition to responding to criminal activity, they provide education, assist victims and partner with local law enforcement agencies to keep campuses safe.   Eight states, either through legislative or judicial action, permit concealed weapons on campus.

Three experts with extensive experience working with or in campus law enforcement will provide insights to help campuses respond effectively to this changing environment by discussing:

  • A scan of current campus law enforcement
  • Understanding and responding to campus carry laws
  • Arming campus police and dealing with active shooters
  • Partnering with the community and community policing in a campus setting

This program is designed to bring together general counsels, administrators from across campus and campus law enforcement personnel to discuss how we can build campus law enforcement departments that meet today’s campus law enforcement needs.
