2019 General Counsel Institute

NACUA's General Counsel Institute provides an invaluable opportunity for in-house general counsel and deputy general counsel at member higher education institutions to learn from and with their peers. Organized by a planning group of experienced general counsel who are keenly aware of the myriad challenges faced by in-house chief legal officers, the sessions will cover a wide range of topics of special interest to in-house general counsel. And, as always, the General Counsel Institute is a wonderful opportunity for networking with fellow GCs.

Scott Cowen Headshot FINAL

The Institute will open with a plenary session on leadership.  Scott Cowen, President Emeritus and Distinguished University Professor of Tulane University, will discuss his just-released book Winnebagos on Wednesdays:  How Visionary Leadership Can Transform Higher Education. At this session moderated by Kelly Capen Douglas, General Counsel at the University of San Diego, President Emeritus Cowen will share his own experiences and discuss characteristics of leadership in the changing higher education environment. He will specifically address how the General Counsel can be a key part of the campus leadership team.

Other sessions at the GC Institute will explore challenges that in-house chief legal officers confront in their daily work.  Drawing from the broad themes identified in results of the NACUA’s 2018 General Counsel Survey, sessions will include content on:

  • Relationships among the President, General Counsel, and Board in a Challenging Climate
  • Navigating Social and Political Movements on Campus
  • Economic Models of Higher Education and Related Legal Issues
  • Office Management
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • And more.

In addition, there will be 10 discussion groups, focusing on a range of topics including faculty, presidential transitions, athletics, and student mental health issues, to name a few, and we will also be debuting our first ever deputy general counsel discussion group.

This program is open only to NACUA members serving as the in-house Chief Legal Officer/General Counsel or the Deputy General Counsel of a higher education institution. Attorneys in state Attorneys General Offices who function as institutional general counsel or who are designated as a primary representative of a member institution are also eligible to attend.  Outside counsel, even if designated as an institution’s primary representative, are not eligible to attend.

We hope that you will join us in New Orleans, LA for what promises to be an enriching learning opportunity for in-house chief legal officers. Register today!
