College and University Compliance Programs: Succeeding in an Era of Change

Colleges and universities are governed by a vast array of federal, state, and local regulations. The broad and once expanding regulatory landscape appears to be experiencing a moment of change.  Questions abound as to what this perceived shift may mean for existing college and university compliance programs generally, and compliance with specific regulations in particular, as well as enforcement.

This CLE workshop will merge traditional programming on foundational compliance issues with new and emerging areas of compliance, beginning with an opening plenary session addressing the changing regulatory landscape and higher education.  Susan Dudley, Director of the George Washington University Regulatory Studies Center and distinguished professor of practice in the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, will draw on her past experience Administrator for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) and her present experience as a professor of regulatory affairs, to discuss the regulatory process, the Trump Administration’s 2-for-1 Mandate , the higher education regulatory landscape, and institutional influence in the regulatory process.

In addition to the Opening Plenary Session, panelists will cover new challenges related to a wide range of topics, including:

  • Outside organizations using the campus
  • Cybersecurity and data privacy
  • Immigration and global partnerships
  • Title IX and Clery
  • Research administration and conflicts of interest
  • Labor law
  • And more!

Other sessions will focus more broadly on big-picture compliance initiatives, such as:

  • Mission and marketing
  • Compliance training models
  • Data analytics
  • And visionary approaches to compliance.
