Implicit Bias: Implications for the Academy

In recent years, several studies have explored the concept of implicit bias -- defined as the attitudes or stereotypes that unconsciously affect our understanding, actions, and decisions -- and its impact across industries, including higher education. As colleges and universities strive to foster inclusive campus climates for diverse populations, understanding implicit bias and strategies to counteract its effects can help campus attorneys and administrators avoid potential liability for their institutions. This webinar will provide an overview of the concept of implicit bias, examine relevant case law, explore legal and practical risks associated with implicit bias on campus, and provide resources and practical tips for its prevention.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding and Recognizing Implicit Bias, Including Its Impact on Decision-Making
  • Organizational and Personal Strategies to Manage Implicit Bias
  • Legal Trends and Key Decisions: Implicit Bias Theory and Its Treatment In The Courts
  • Legal and Practical Risks
  • Resources and Practical Tips for Reducing Institutional Risk

This webinar will be of interest to general counsel and attorneys who advise colleges and universities on investigations and employment or student conduct matters and administrators responsible for student conduct, employment or other investigations.
