CEO’s Corner

I recently shared with you the results of the NACUA General Counsel survey about top issues on the plates of member GCs. We will be addressing two of those key issues at the 2018 Annual Conference plenary and featured sessions in Minneapolis. I am delighted that so many of you will be with us (so far we have more than 1400 registrants!).

The opening plenary on Sunday, June 24 will feature five distinguished presidents who will discuss issues related to campus protests and the lessons they have learned from their own experiences as presidents of Howard University, the University of Virginia, St. Louis University and California State University Fullerton. Our colleague and former General Counsel Jonathan Alger, now president of James Madison University, will moderate and pose a series of questions to the other presidents.  This topic is clearly one of immense interest and concern for members and we are grateful that these five presidents have agreed to be with us.

On Monday, June 25, our featured session will focus on issues related to the perception of higher education and the increased scrutiny faced by higher education institutions as a result, issues that were also evident in the results of the GC survey. We will have the leader of a polling company provide a presentation on the data, with information about focus groups he has conducted for the American Council on Education (ACE) regarding the value of higher education. I will then moderate a panel to discuss those important issues further, with a president, a trustee and a GC who will also suggest how higher education might respond.

I can’t wait to hear from these great speakers, plus more than 200 others speakers presenting at the 90 sessions included on the conference agenda. Thanks to all of the speakers and the conference planning group for making this what I know will be a successful conference in the great city of Minneapolis!
