The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the University and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, faculty and academic departments, the Office of Student Life, Human Resources, Advancement, Athletics, Public Safety, Business and Finance, and the Wexner Medical Center among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted institution, with a sophisticated and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of law, including litigation, labor and employment, public contracting, real estate and construction, intellectual property, research and technology transfer, business transactions, taxation and benefits, administrative law, health care law, public safety and criminal law matters, federal and state constitutional and public law issues, and more.
The Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice and services in the areas of employee benefits and tax, with a particular dedication to the University’s Office of Human Resources. The Associate General Counsel will draft, negotiate, review and provide leadership and advice on a wide range of employee benefits and tax matters, including health and welfare plans, fringe benefits, executive compensation, retirement plans, employment taxes and payroll matters. Responsibilities will also include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting agreements and recommending policies and procedures to promote employee benefits and tax compliance, and the implementation of other duties and special projects, as assigned by leadership in the Office of Legal Affairs.
Required: J.D. Graduate from an accredited law school and be a member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less; minimum of three (3) years of experience in employee benefits/tax practice; thorough understanding and working knowledge of Internal Revenue Code, Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, COBRA and other federal laws impacting group health plans and other employee benefit arrangements.
Desired: Significant legal experience with employee benefits and tax law matters for universities and/or nonprofits; previous experience with public entities and public law issues (such as public records law and ethics laws).
