CLE Workshop

March 30-April 1, 2016
Higher Education Employment Law

Colleges and universities conscientiously try to maintain a healthy and productive workplace. Lawyers who advise them play a key role in helping to accomplish that goal by understanding current employment law as well as the risks that can arise when employment matters result in costly litigation and negative publicity. Please join your colleagues in Denver for an in-depth CLE Workshop where expert practitioners will examine recent employment case law and regulations and provide practical strategies that are essential to counseling and representing your higher education client.

This CLE will begin with plenary speaker, Veta Richardson, President and CEO of the Association of Corporate Counsel, who will discuss some of the issues currently on the minds of corporate counsel. Kelly Capen Douglas and Steve Hirschfeld, two NACUA experts, will follow Veta Richardson with an employment law update, noting both similarities and differences with the issues higher education lawyers face. In a two-part litigation session, in part one, attendees will first focus on early case evaluation, cost containment and positioning for settlement. Part two will cover best practices in pre-trial preparation such as e-discovery, ongoing case assessment and management of post-litigation issues. Regular sessions will focus on topics ranging from managing mental health issues in the workplace to preparing for the enactment of the Department of Labor's new FLSA regulations. In addition to regular sessions, two sets of discussion groups will allow participants to exchange ideas, pose questions, and share experiences and solutions with colleagues in a small-group setting.

Join fellow NACUA members and other administrators for an opportunity to learn from experts and discuss areas of common concern. The program is designed for college and university counsel responsible for employment law matters, as well as administrators with significant responsibilities in employment law, personnel, and human resources.
