February 1-3, 2017
2017 General Counsel Institute
NACUA's General Counsel Institute provides an invaluable opportunity for in-house general counsel and deputy general counsel at member higher education institutions to learn from and with their peers. Organized by a planning group of experienced general counsel who are keenly aware of the myriad challenges faced by in-house chief legal officers, the sessions will cover a wide range of topics of special interest to in-house general counsel.

Part 1: The Business of Higher Education

SIF Headshot 2

After NACUA discussions about the importance of members
understanding the business of higher education, the 2017
General Counsel Institute will devote one day of featured
content to these important issues. Susan Fitzgerald, Associate
Managing Director of the Global Higher Education and Not for
Profit Ratings Division of Moody’s, will open the workshop with
a plenary session on Moody’s outlook for higher education as
well as the methodology underlying Moody’s ratings.

Later in the meeting, Matt Hamill, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Issue Analysis at the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) will preview findings from a forthcoming NACUBO publication on Economic Models on Higher Education.

In addition to these two featured sessions, general counsel, chief business officers, advancement officers, and IT professionals will speak on:

  • The Entrepreneurial University,
  • Assessing the Economic Sustainability of Institutions of Higher Education, and
  • Internal Business Partnerships (with a focus on the Office of Institutional Advancement in one session and the Office of Information Technology in another)

Part 2: Roles, Responsibilities, and Regulations

Part 2 will focus on content that has traditionally been offered in the past at the General Counsel Institute, exploring challenges that in-house chief legal officers confront in their daily work.  To launch Part 2, President Kurt Schmoke (left) from the University of Baltimore and President Michael Fitts (right) from Tulane University will lead a plenary session on key issues facing higher education and leadership skills needed to address these issues. They will also discuss the evolving role of the general counsel in higher education.  They will be interviewed by moderator Pam Bernard, Vice President and General Counsel at Duke University, about leadership skills, communicating effectively with various constitutes on campus, and the important relationship between the president and the GC.
