The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly-qualified attorney to join its Education Section of the Health, Education, and Social Services Division. RESPONSIBILITIES: This position, based on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, will serve as Associate University Counsel and Assistant Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section and the University Counsel. In this broad higher education and government practice, the Associate University Counsel provides legal advice on the variety of issues that arise at a large public research University, with particular focus and emphasis on student issues, all aspects of litigation in state and federal courts, constitutional issues, contract and procurement matters, and regulatory matters, in addition to general legal matters pertaining to higher education administration.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a JD degree, and a minimum of three years’ experience in the practice of law, including work in some or all of the areas noted above. Must be admitted to the Virginia bar, or be eligible for immediate admission. Excellent oral communication and writing skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills, and an ability to manage large numbers of projects simultaneously and work under pressure, are required. The successful candidate will represent the University with professionalism and confidence, and will engage in collaborative and collegial practice within the office, with other members of the University community, and with the Education Section of the Office of the Attorney General.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. Experience with higher education, litigation, and state government are preferred. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
