NACUA's Programs and Services

Educational Programs

Annual Conference

The NACUA Annual Conference focuses on current issues and legal developments in the field of higher education law. Plenary sessions address challenges in the field, while more than 70 panel and small discussion sessions focus on specific issues of importance to higher education lawyers and their institutions. Networking opportunities abound throughout the Annual Conference, where you have the chance to share formal and informal insight and expertise with hundreds of higher education attorneys. For additional information, contact Meredith McMillian, Meetings and Events Planner, at mmcmillan@nacua.org.

Continuing Legal Education Workshops

NACUA offers a variety of continuing legal education (CLE) workshops each year. Programs are held at diverse locations to facilitate member attendance. NACUA workshops provide up-to-date legal information from practitioners with real “hands-on” experience, and – equally important – give members the critical opportunity to interact with colleagues who share their challenges and concerns. For additional information, contact Meredith McMillian, Meetings and Events Planner, at mmcmillan@nacua.org.

Virtual Seminars

In 2001, NACUA launched a new series of education programming to complement the traditional CLE Workshop and Annual Conference programs. NACUA’s Virtual Seminars are programs that members “attend” without leaving their campus. By “attending,” registrants listen to the speakers over the phone while following a PowerPoint presentation over the web. These programs touch on “hot topic” issues in a timely and effective matter and appeal to both the attorney and their client (administrators, college employees). NACUA also makes available the audio recording and materials of all Virtual Seminars via CD-ROM or audiocassette package. For additional information, contact Meredith McMillian, Meetings and Events Planner, at mmcmillan@nacua.org.

Publications

NACUA Publications

The Association publishes a variety of special pamphlets, monographs, compendia, and other resources of interest to both higher education attorneys and administrators. At any given time, member attorneys are working on more than a dozen new NACUA publications. For additional information, contact Linda Henderson, Manager of Publications, at lhenderson@nacua.org.

The Journal of College and University Law

The Journal of College and University Law (JCUL) is the only national, quarterly law review devoted exclusively to higher education law. Published jointly by NACUA and the University of Notre Dame Law School, The JCUL includes articles of current interest to college and university counsel; commentaries on recent cases, legislative and administrative developments; book reviews; student comments; and occasional papers from NACUA annual conferences and workshops. For additional information, contact Linda Henderson, Manager of Publications, at lhenderson@nacua.org.

On-Line Services

Legal Reference Service

NACUA’s Legal Reference Service (LRS) is a unique national clearinghouse that provides comprehensive, timely information on college and university legal issues. The LRS includes thousands of documents on higher education law – contracts, policies, briefs, cases, outlines, articles, lists of resources, and other materials. LRS staff members continually add to existing resources by tracking current legislation and case law, and by surveying material submitted by NACUA members or published by other members of the higher education community. For more information on Legal Reference Service, including how to contribute to the LRS archives, please contact Karl Brevitz, Director of Legal Resources at kbrevitz@nacua.org

NACUANET

The Association’s listserv – NACUANET – is considered among the premier benefits of membership. It provides a forum for NACUA members to expand their legal knowledge base by sharing, via e-mail, professional advice, legal information, sample policies and procedures, resources, and best practices germane to higher education law. For questions about using NACUANET, contact NACUA Tech Support, at techsupport@nacua.org.

NACUA Website

NACUA’s homepage is located at http://www.nacua.org and offers the most up-to-date information available in higher education law, including texts of documents, court decisions, white papers, law firm memoranda, and links to other law-related websites such as courts, published decisions, and government agencies (EEOC and others). In addition, NACUA’s web site contains information on upcoming NACUA workshops, conferences, and publications; updates to the Directory of Membership and Services; and links to other higher education resources on the web. For questions about using the NACUA Website, contact NACUA Tech Support, at techsupport@nacua.org.

NACUA Higher Education Case Highlights

Launched in January 2002, NACUA Higher Education Case Highlights is delivered in partnership with West to provide the most current higher education cases to NACUA members in a timely and easy-to-access manner. The Higher Education Case Highlights are available exclusively to members over NACUA’s web site and delivered weekly via email. By clicking on the hyperlinked case name or other title by the synopsis, NACUA members can access the full text of selected cases and documents via Westlaw, at no expense to the member. For questions about the Case Highlights, contact NACUA Tech Support, at techsupport@nacua.org.

NACUANOTES

NACUA produces and distributes short (1 – 3 page) bulletins on a specific and narrow topic of interest in higher education law. This service is exclusively available to members and is sent via email on a periodic basis. The intent of this service is to provide members with practical information on specific issues in a format that can be adapted for and distributed to campus administrators by the member. The notes and alerts consist of concise statements of the topic, the applicable law, practice tips and citations to applicable authority, along with access to additional resources for counsel (articles, outlines, forms and documents). For more information on NACUANOTES, including how to volunteer to become an author, please contact Karl Brevitz, Director of Legal Resources at kbrevitz@nacua.org.

Position Registry

As a service to the higher education community, NACUA maintains a Position Registry in which colleges and universities advertise legal-related job vacancies. The Registry’s intent is to offer information; it is not a placement service, nor does it provide individual assistance. There is no charge to advertise position vacancies, but subscribers are charged a fee to receive the Registry via U.S. Mail or nacua.web. Send position announcements to Deloise Bulter at dbutler@nacua.org.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities abound at NACUA. Attorney members serve on the Board of Directors as well as various Committees, plan workshops, write and edit publications, mentor new members, share documents through the Legal Reference Service, and participate on NACUANET. For additional information on NACUA volunteer opportunities, contact Miriam S. Miller, Manager of Membership and Outreach Services at Mmiller@nacua.org.
