Thomas
P. Hustoles is a member in the Kalamazoo and Lansing, Michigan offices of the law
firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, and the immediate past Chair of its Labor and
Employment Law Group. For the past 29 years he has represented universities, community
colleges, school districts, municipalities, and private sector employers in the full range
of employment matters. He currently serves as outside counsel to numerous colleges and
universities in labor and general matters. He has served on the Board of Directors of the
National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), chaired the
Journal of College University Law Editorial Board, co-chaired the NACUA section on
Personnel, Tenure, and Retirement Programs, and served on the Michigan State Bar Labor
Section Council and has received NACUAs Fellow award. He co-edited two
books published by NACUA entitled Legal Issues in Faculty Employment and Regulating Racial
Harassment on Campus, co-authored a NACUA pamphlet on How to Conduct a Sexual Harassment
Investigation, authored articles for the Journal of College and University Law including
Faculty and Staff Dismissals: Developing Contract and Tort Theories, 10 JCUL 479 (1984),
authored an article for the Michigan State Bar Journal on age discrimination challenges to
early retirement options, authored an article for the CUPA Journal entitled Dealing With
Employee Misconduct On and Off Duty: A Practical Framework, Winter 1994, Vol. 45, No. 4,
and has edited the Michigan Employment Law Handbook for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America (management labor category) and Whos Who
in American Law (Marquis). He has presented at numerous state, regional, and national
higher education conferences. He attended the University of Michigan and the University of
Detroit, and received his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Detroit; and his
J.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Detroit School of Law.
Kaye
Lingle Koonce (Moderator) is General Counsel and Executive Assistant to the
President at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina where she has also
served on the faculty. Prior to her tenure at Trident she was a special prosecutor for
child rape cases in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Ms. Koonce served from 1999 until January
of 2003 as Chair of the S.C. Human Affairs Commission, the states EECO referral
agency. Ms. Koonce has also served on the NACUA Board of Directors. She is an active
Alumnus of the S. C. Executive Institute and regularly serves on the Institutes
faculty. She serves as a pro bono mediator for the S.C. Office of Human Resources. Ms.
Koonce received a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of
Missouri-Columbia and her law degree from the University of South Carolina. She frequently
speaks on topics including sexual harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act, board
service, governance and conflict resolution. Since 1998, Ms. Koonce has served as a
consultant, trainer and facilitator for several colleges and non-profit boards as well as
for the American Community College Trustees at regional and national conferences and
workshops.
Jackie
McClain is the vice chancellor for human resources at the 23-campus California
State University system, the largest university system in the country. As vice chancellor,
McClain provides strategic leadership for the CSU's comprehensive human resources
programs. She oversees personnel, compensation, employment practices, and employee
relations issues for more than 44,000 employees. McClain, who has worked in university
human resources for more than two decades, is a prominent national leader in her field.
She served as president of the College and University Personnel Association from 1999-2000
and has won numerous awards for her publications and service. Prior to joining the CSU,
she was the executive director of human resources and affirmative action at the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor. McClain holds a bachelor's degree from the University of
Missouri-Kansas City and a law degree from the University of Kansas-Lawrence.
