Background checks have suddenly moved to the forefront in college and university hiring. Recent highly publicized incidents of college and university faculty and employees with criminal convictions, fraudulent resumes, diploma mill degrees or other questionable credentials or checkered pasts have heightened sensitivity to the potential risk of both institutional liability and institutional embarrassment. As a result, many institutions are strengthening or implementing new background check procedures for prospective employees. In some cases, background checks on  students have also been considered. This program will examine this trend, including discussion of:

*The primary value of Background Checks

*The various types of Background Checks

*Determining whether to conduct Background Checks, for who, and about what

*How to conduct Background Checks

*Legal Restrictions on Background Checks

*What to do with Background Check information once you have it

An experienced panel of in-house counsel, external counsel and insurance counsel will review these topics and answer registrant questions throughout the program.

Panelists include NACUA members Wendy Tarlow, Associate University Counsel, Cornell University; Martha Munsch, Reed Smith, LLP; and Frank Vinik, United Educators Insurance Reciprocal Risk Retention Group.
