College and University Compliance Programs: Organization and Key Compliance Obligations

Program Description

The compliance obligations of colleges and universities are vast and growing, and the pressure on institutions from both external and internal sources to implement, monitor and improve institutional compliance programs continues unabated. In an era of budget cuts and limited resources yet growing regulation, designing and implementing effective compliance programs to track, monitor and update the most important compliance duties and risks is daunting indeed. It is a task shared by a wide range of institutional officials, including general counsel, compliance officers, risk managers, auditors and an entire array of administrators with primary responsibility for compliance in their own departments or divisions.

This program will cover the latest developments in design and administration of effective institutional compliance and enterprise risk management programs, including:

  • • The legal and policy mandates supporting compliance
  • • Assessing the effectiveness of your compliance program
  • • Effective communication in compliance programs
  • • Advanced risk analysis and risk management
  • • International compliance: the global compliance program
  • • Responding to governmental inquiries and investigations

The program will also address the legal compliance obligations in many key areas of the law, including:

  • • Compliance in privacy, data retention and information security
  • • Export and trade controls compliance
  • • Compliance in intercollegiate athletics
  • • ADA and facilities accessibility compliance
  • • Student speech and first amendment compliance
  • • The challenges of ERISA compliance
  • • Tax exempt bond compliance

Also included in the workshop will be 12 small discussion groups addressing additional specific compliance areas or compliance strategies. Workshop sessions will be accompanied by detailed written materials prepared by session panelists. Join your colleagues and an expert workshop faculty composed of institutional counsel, compliance officers, administrators, consultants and attorneys to learn how to start or improve the compliance program on your campus, and the role of institutional counsel and other key administrators in the compliance process.
