María G. Alfaro-Lopez currently serves as general counsel for John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. In addition to years of higher education law experience as assistant general counsel at the University of Michigan and at Wayne State University, she served in municipal and county government, including divisional chief and principal attorney with the Wayne County (Detroit, Michigan) prosecutor’s office, principal attorney with the Wayne County corporation counsel, and city attorney for Highland Park, Michigan. María earned her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and her law degree from Arizona State University.

Mr. Jonathan R. Alger is the sixth president of James Madison University, taking office on July 1, 2012. He previously served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and has also held prior positions at the University of Michigan, American Association of University Professors, U.S. Department of Education, and a major international law firm. Mr. Alger is a nationally recognized scholar and speaker on higher education policy and law, and has taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. At the University of Michigan, he helped to coordinate two landmark admissions cases on the educational benefits of diversity, and he has worked with institutions across the country in developing and implementing diversity programs. He currently serves on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Advisory Council for the National Institutes of Health.

Larry Barkoff is Assistant General Counsel with the Legal Affairs Division at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), providing support to EMU’s Charter Schools Office. Mr. Barkoff has been in this position since 2002. Mr. Barkoff’s educational background includes a B.A. degree in international relations from the James Madison College of Michigan State University (MSU). Larry has a Master of Labor Relations from MSU. He received his JD degree from Wayne State University (WSU). Larry’s professional experience includes a number of years in human resources at both EMU and WSU. He specialized in employee relations, employee compensation, employment, union/management relations and organizational development. In addition, he was with the law firm of Plunkett & Cooney, where he practiced labor and employment law.

Pamela J. Bernard is Vice President and General Counsel of Duke University. Ms. Bernard is responsible for a wide variety of legal issues, including student and employment issues, health law, research issues, tax-exempt organizations, athletics, corporate matters, and coordinating litigation for the University and Duke University Health System. Prior to her appointment at Duke, she served as Vice President and General Counsel to the University of Florida. Ms. Bernard is past President of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, a national professional association for higher education lawyers. She served on its governing Board of Directors, numerous committees, and task forces over the past two decades. She was awarded NACUA’s 2004 Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the field of higher education law practice. Ms. Bernard is a frequent speaker on legal issues, and also has authored papers and other publications relating to higher education law. From July 2007 to June 2011 she authored the “Legal Standpoint” column for Trusteeship magazine. Ms. Bernard served on Florida’s United States Federal District Court Civil Justice Reform Advisory Group and the Bench and Bar Fund Administration Committee. She was a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Amateurism, and currently serves on the NCAA’s General Counsel Advisory Board. She is past chair of the Florida Bar Committee on Education Law. Ms. Bernard received her Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Florida. Before becoming a lawyer, she was a private investment trustee.

Jerry D. Blakemore is Vice President and General Counsel at Northern Illinois University. Mr. Blakemore is a graduate of Princeton University from which he received his B. A. Degree in Political Science in 1976. Mr. Blakemore was the 1976 recipient of the Princeton University Frederick Douglass Award for his academic and community service achievements. Mr. Blakemore is a graduate of the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois and is licensed to practice law before the Illinois Supreme Court as well as the Federal District Trial and Appellate courts.

Karl F. Brevitz is Director of Legal Resources for NACUA (NACUA) in Washington, DC where he oversees the legal resources and programming of the Association. Prior to joining NACUA he served for 12 years as Director of Education at the Institute of Continuing Legal Education at the University of Michigan Law School, and for six years as college attorney for Ferris State College, a public institution in Michigan. He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Adrian College and J.D. magna cum laude from Wayne State University Law School. He serves as NACUA Staff Liaison to the Committees on Annual Program and Web Page Legal Resources and to the Editorial Board of the Journal of College and University Law; and as co-liaison to the Committee on Legal Education and the NACUANOTES Editorial Board.

W. Scott Cole is Vice President and General Counsel at the University of Central Florida. As chief legal officer for the second largest university in the nation, he is responsible for all legal representation of the university and its affiliated direct support organizations. He was previously Associate General Counsel at the University of Florida and began his career with a commercial law firm in Jacksonville, Florida. Scott currently serves as a member of the NACUA Board of Directors as well as the Nominations Committee and the Committee on Finance and Audit, serving as the chair of the audit Subcommittee.   Scott serves on the Board of Directors for the Small Business Development Center in Orlando, Florida and has served as corporate counsel for numerous university affiliated 501(c)(3) organizations. He is a multi-year recipient of the Florida Legal Elite award, awarded to the top 2% of attorneys in Florida as determined by members of the Florida Bar.   Scott earned a BS in Accounting and a JD from the University of Florida.    

David Corry is General Counsel at Liberty University. Corry previously served as Senior Litigation Counsel with Liberty Counsel, a nationwide public interest religious civil liberties law firm. Corry’s practice with Liberty Counsel focused on free speech and religious liberties matters. Prior to that, he was Chief Legal Officer for a top-30 builder. The first part of his legal career involved real-estate-related commercial litigation, serving as a shareholder and founding attorney of a medium-sized real estate boutique firm in Tampa, Fla. Corry graduated with honors from Florida State University College of Law in 1990. He received a B.A. from the University of South Florida in 1986. He has published numerous articles in legal publications. He held positions in higher education before entering law school. He also serves on the School of Business graduate program faculty at Liberty.

Mary Jo Dively is Vice President and General Counsel for Carnegie Mellon University, where she oversees the wide range of legal issues involving the University in Pennsylvania, nationally and at its many international campuses. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, she was in the private practice of law for nineteen years, most recently as partner in the national law firm, Reed Smith, as head of its Technology, Media and Communications Group. Mrs. Dively received her B.A. and B.S. from the University of Kansas and her J.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. She is a member of the American Law Institute; is one of Pennsylvania's appointed Commissioners to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws; is current Chair of the Board of Trustees of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the UPMC Health System where she serves on both the Executive Committee and the Information Technology Committee. She is the current chair of the Board of Trustees of Shady Side Academy. Mrs. Dively and her husband, Lane, are the parents of triplet boys who are currently sophomores at Shady Side Academy.

Steve Dunham is the Vice President and General Counsel of The Pennsylvania State University.  He previously served as Vice President and General Counsel of Johns Hopkins University.  Earlier  he served as Vice President and General Counsel of the University of Minnesota and as a litigation partner and Chair of the law firm of Morrison and Foerster resident in their Denver and San Francisco offices.  He has taught at several different law schools and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Soka University of America.  He  graduated from Princeton University and Yale Law School.

Nancy S. Footer joined the University of North Texas System in March 2004 as Vice Chancellor & General Counsel. Previously, Ms. Footer was General Counsel for Bowling Green State University, where she also served as an adjunct faculty member teaching higher education law in the College of Education and Human Development. Prior to her tenure at BGSU, she served as Associate General Counsel for the University of Houston System. Ms. Footer has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and is past president of the Texas Association of College and University Attorneys. She currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the UT Austin Department of History, the Board of Directors of The Concilio in Dallas, and is a graduate of Leadership Dallas 2010. She received her B.A. with special honors in history from the University of Texas at Austin and her J.D. from the University of Houston.

Lori Fox has served as General Counsel at Teachers College since 2009. She was previously Deputy General Counsel to the J. Paul Getty Trust (2003-2009) and, Acting Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary to the Trust (2007-2008). Earlier, she was Associate General Counsel at Washington University in St. Louis, where she also taught, and a litigator in private practice. She has served on NACUA's Board of Directors (2000-2003) and many NACUA committees and has spoken on diverse topics at NACUA conferences. She holds a B.A. from Yale College and a J.D. from New York University School of Law. She clerked for the Honorable Diana E. Murphy, then U.S. District Judge for the District of Minnesota.  

Ann Franke is president of Wise Results, LLC, which she founded in 2005. She consults with educational institutions on risk, policy, employment, and training issues. She previously held senior positions with the American Association of University Professors and United Educators Insurance. She is a frequent speaker at NACUA and other programs, and her writings have appeared in publications including the Chronicle of Higher Education and Trusteeship. She edited a NACUA compendium on employment discrimination training and has authored national reports on tenure, faculty retirement, financial distress, and student transportation safety. Ms. Franke is a fellow of NACUA and has been privileged to serve on several NACUA committees. Recent consulting projects have included sexual assault training, faculty handbooks, organizational effectiveness, expert testimony, and faculty discipline. In 1990 she received a Fulbright award to study Australian private universities. Ms. Franke earned BA, MA, and JD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and an LLM from Georgetown University.

David S. Garber is the President and founder of Princeton Legal Search Group. He leads the strategic growth of the company which has resulted in entry into new geographic markets and recognition of Princeton Legal Search Group as a trusted partner across a wide range of industries. David has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and received his law degree from Rutgers Law School-Newark. He litigated cases for eleven years, first with McCarter & English in Newark, New Jersey and later in his career with Buchanan Ingersoll where he was the partner in charge of the Firm's Princeton, New Jersey litigation department. David serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Legal Search Consultants. He is a Past President of the Rutgers School of Law -Newark Alumni Association and currently is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Alumni Association. David regularly serves on panels that address recruiting, job search and career management for attorneys.

Eileen Goldgeier is Vice Chancellor and General Counsel at NC State University. Previously, she served as General Counsel at UNC Wilmington from August 2003 until February 2010. Prior to that position, she was Associate General Counsel at NC State University from March 1997 to August 2003. Before relocating to North Carolina, Eileen was employed for five years in the General Counsel's Office of The Johns Hopkins University and was an Associate at Venable, Baetjer & Howard in Baltimore from 1988-91. She is a graduate of Brown University (B.A. in Environmental Studies) and Emory University School of Law (J.D.). She is licensed to practice law in North Carolina, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Melinda W. Grier consults on legal, employment, governance and diversity matters related to higher education through her firm, Melinda Grier Consulting. She has worked in higher education as an administrator and a lawyer for over thirty years, most recently as General Counsel for the University of Oregon from 1998 to 2010. She taught Employment Discrimination Law at the UO Law School from 1992- 2012 and also taught courses in Higher Education Law and In-House Counsel. In NACUA, she served as President, Treasurer and a member-at-large of the Board of the Directors. She received the NACUA Distinguished Service Award in 2009. In addition to her NACUA service, Ms. Grier is a frequent speaker on legal issues related to higher education law, ethics and civil rights. She received her A.B. from Stanford University in political science and communications, her M.A. in political science from the University of Connecticut, and J.D. from the University of Oregon Law School.

Gregory A. Haile, Esq., is the Vice President of Governmental Policy and Regulatory Affairs for Broward College. In this role, Haile serves as chief legal counsel for the College and oversees all local, statewide, and federal government affairs for the institution.Haile was educated at the Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the National Black Law Journal, and Arizona State University, where he graduated magna cum laude and was selected from among more than 13,000 students as the most outstanding undergraduate in his college. Haile came to Broward College after a decade of service at several law firms including, most recently, Berger Singerman in Ft. Lauderdale.  

Robert R. Hoon serves as Associate General Counsel at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Before relocating to North Carolina in 2002, Mr. Hoon worked as Assistant to the Minority Leader in the Washington State House of Representatives, a medical malpractice defense and construction litigator in Seattle, and then serving Washington State University first as an Assistant Attorney General, business officer and in-house counsel, Real Estate Officer, Director of Contract Management, Director of Business Services, and Public Finance Officer, responsible for various business operations, non-appropriated capital projects, non-state appropriated facilities, construction disputes and claims management. Mr. Hoon’s subspecialties include construction and public works, public finance, copyright, real estate, complex business transactions, and contract management and negotiation. Mr. Hoon graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington State University (B.A. 1982) and law school from the University of Washington (J.D. 1986).

Marcia Isaacson is the Interim Chief Compliance Officer for the City University of New York.  She previously was a federal prosecutor for many years with the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the Public Integrity Section of the United States Department of Justice. She received her undergraduate and law degrees from Stanford University.

Robb Jones is the senior vice president and general counsel for claims management at United Educators (UE) Insurance Risk Retention Group. At UE, he heads the team of 24 lawyers and 18 other professionals responsible for liability claims management for more than 1,200 colleges, universities, and K-12 schools. He has been at United Educators since 1997. During the first half of 2011 he has served as UE’s acting president and CEO. Jones has over thirty years of experience serving the higher education community. He currently serves as a trustee for a liberal arts college, has evaluated higher education programs for the federal government and a state board of regents, and has taught as an adjunct faculty member at two different institutions. From 1994-97 Jones was director of the Judicial Education Division of the Federal Judicial Center, where he developed and managed training and continuing legal education programs for the federal courts. From 1991-94 he served as chief of staff to Chief Justice William Rehnquist at the U.S. Supreme Court. Before that time he was a litigation partner in a Washington law firm, where he concentrated on education, employment, and media litigation.  

Walter M. Kimbrough is President of Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. A native of Atlanta, Dr. Kimbrough was his high school salutatorian and student body president in 1985, and went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in higher education from Georgia State University. In October of 2004, at the age of 37, he was named the 12th president of Philander Smith College. In 2012 he became the 7th president of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Kimbrough has been recognized for his research and writings on HBCUs and African American men in college. Kimbrough also has been noted for his active use of social media to engage students in articles by The Chronicle of Higher Education and CASE Currents. He was cited by Bachelors Degree.com as one of 25 college presidents you should follow on Twitter (@HipHopPrez). Dr. Kimbrough has forged a national reputation as an expert on fraternities and sororities, and has served as an expert witness in almost a dozen hazing cases. He is the author of the book, Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities. In 2009, he was named by Diverse Issues in Higher Education as one of 25 To Watch. In 2010, he made the coveted Ebony Magazine Power 100 list of the doers and influencers in the African American community. Dr. Kimbrough and his wife Adria Nobles Kimbrough, a higher education attorney, are the proud parents of two children: Lydia Nicole, 6, and Benjamin Barack, 4.  

Andrew J. Lauer serves as Vice President for Legal Affairs, Secretary and General Counsel of Yeshiva University. In this capacity, Mr. Lauer is responsible for all legal matters pertaining to the University and its affiliates within the United States and abroad. Mr. Lauer also serves as counsel to the President of the University. Prior to his appointment at Yeshiva University, Mr. Lauer was a Partner at the international law firm of Thelen Reid Brown Raysman and Steiner LLP where he maintained a large and diverse practice, with a speciality in Labor and Employment Law. Mr. Lauer also established and maintained an extensive Israel practice at Thelen where he worked with many Israeli owned and/or affiliated companies and regularly traveled to Israel to meet with his Israeli clients and contacts. Mr. Lauer also served as Senior Employment Counsel in the Office of General Counsel of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting and as Assistant General Counsel of Deloitte & Touche USA.  Prior to Deloitte, Mr. Lauer was an Assistant District Attorney in the Kings County District Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, New York, where he conducted numerous trials and investigations and was assigned to several bureaus including the elite Trial Cadre unit of the Homicide Bureau.

David Leone is the Director of Litigation Support Services for Saul Ewing LLP, an Am Law 200 law firm with nine offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. David oversees firm-wide strategic initiatives to improve the use of technology in litigation. Prior to joining Saul Ewing, David was the Litigation Support Project Manager at RR Donnelley, a Fortune 500 company specializing in Business Process Outsourcing and print-related services. In his role at RR Donnelley, David managed eDiscovery teams and vendors in all phases of litigation from collection, scanning and digital processing to document review and ultimate production and trial support. He worked closely with stakeholders from large Fortune 100 companies, inside counsel and national law firms. Prior to RR Donnelley, David was the Project Director at Virtual Firm Legal Support. He also served as a litigation senior staff attorney at Dechert LLP in Philadelphia where he directed a team of staff attorneys and supervised contract attorneys for national discovery in high profile pharmaceutical products litigations and collaborated on long and short-term discovery and trial preparation initiatives. David also spent time as the President at Nexomedia, a hi-tech software and design consulting firm for Fortune 100 clients.

Sheri Lipman is University Counsel for the University of Memphis, where she also teaches Sports Law as an adjunct instructor in the University's Law School. Sheri was previously in private practice, where she served as outside counsel to the University in a large employment matter. Active in community organizations, Sheri is a fellow in the local Bar Foundation, and served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Hon. Julia S. Gibbons. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and New York University School of Law.

Dr. C. Peter Magrath, who served as president of Binghamton C. Peter Magrath photo University, State University of New York from 2010-2011, is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and from Cornell University with a PhD in political science. His scholarly interests include American constitutional law, constitutional history and the operations of the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as higher education administration and leadership; public policy and financing; and international affairs. Dr. Magrath’s extensive higher education administration experience includes serving as associate dean of the graduate school at Brown University; as dean of arts and sciences, dean of faculties (provost) and interim president at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; as president of Binghamton University from 1972-1974; and as president of the four-campus University of Minnesota for 10 years. Dr. Magrath also served as president of the University of Missouri System from 1985-1992, before assuming the presidency of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grand Colleges (NASULGC), now the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU). APLU established the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Award in his honor, funded by the Kellogg Foundation, to recognize the outreach and engagement partnership efforts of four-year public universities. He served as senior presidential advisor to The College Board from 2006 to 2011, and now does consulting work. He also served as interim president of West Virginia University from 2008-2009, where he is credited with bringing immediate stability and credibility to the campus.

Peter McDonough is Princeton University's General Counsel. For over two decades his campus legal advising and representation has been broad-based. For NACUA, in addition to being a frequent speaker, he has served in various capacities, including as co-chair of its Committee on Legal Education and as a member of its Board of Directors. Before coming to Princeton from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius' New York office, Mr. McDonough practiced as a litigator and trial lawyer in federal and state courts, as well as in various arbitration forums. He received his A.B., in Economics, and his J.D. from Georgetown University.

Bruce W. Melton is an Associate General Counsel who provides counsel in a variety of areas including government relations, institutional policies and procedures, internal investigations, litigation, employment, faculty matters, and diversity initiatives across the campus. He is a member of the University’s Emergency Management Committee and its Data Stewardship Council; he also serves ex officio to the University’s Diversity Leadership Council. Prior to joining the University in 2007, Bruce was a founding partner of a Chicago law firm that represented colleges and universities in litigation and counseling matters. Bruce graduated from Cornell College magna cum laude; he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1986, where he served as an Associate Editor of the Law Review. Bruce is a Lecturer in the Law School and he teaches higher education law in Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy.

George E. Moore has served as University Counsel of Temple University since 1989, and also as Secretary to the Board of Trustees since 1992.  In 2007, he also was named Senior Vice President.  George also was an Adjunct Instructor at the James E. Beasley School of Law from 1990 to 2007.  He is a director of the Temple Law Foundation and Temple Educational Support Services, Ltd. (a Japanese corporation).  George is responsible for overseeing all of the legal affairs of the University and its subsidiaries, and provides advice on a wide variety of matters, including corporate governance, policy development, employment and labor issues, commercial transactions, constitutional law, and interpretation of statutes and regulations.   Prior to coming to Temple, George spent 13 years in private practice as an associate and partner with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP.  He is a graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A. 1968) and the Temple University School of Law (J.D. 1976).

Henry Morris is Partner at Arent Fox in Washington DC. Mr. Morris focuses his practice on counseling and litigating employment, labor, and education law cases. He has advised clients regarding and handled cases involving equal employment opportunity, employee discipline and discharge, employment torts, breach of contract, trade secrets, non-compete agreements, fair labor standards, plant closings, reductions-in-force, successor employer responsibilities, workers' compensation, and unemployment compensation. Mr. Morris is a member of Arent Fox's Diversity Committee and Employment Committee. Mr. Morris represents clients in a wide range of industries. These industries include retail, education, healthcare, construction, property management, broadcast, communications, entertainment, building service contracting, and hospitality. He also has represented several governmental entities. Mr. Morris is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. And he is the firm's contact with the Employment Law Alliance, an international consortium of some of the world's leading management-side employment lawyers. Mr. Morris is a frequent lecturer and has written articles on a wide range of labor and employment issues. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and Virginia Bar. He received his JD from Columbia University School of Law in1983, and his AB from Columbia College, Columbia University, in 1978.

Patricia C. Ohlendorf is the chief legal officer and chief governmental relations officer of the University of Texas at Austin and has general responsibility for the management of interfaces with the Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, state and local governmental and quasi- governmental entities, the state legislature, and federal governmental representatives and entities on issues of federal legislation and regulations.  The vice president provides guidance on formal internal processes and policies and has general responsibility for coordination of auditing, training, and assessment processes to assure compliance with internal policies and external laws, regulations, and policies.  The vice president also provides oversight of intercollegiate athletics, is liaison with the Athletics Councils, and manages interfaces with the Big XII Conference and the NCAA.  

Stephen J. Owens was appointed General Counsel of the University of Missouri System on January 22, 2008, following the retirement of Marvin E. “Bunky” Wright. Owens served as interim president of the University of Missouri System for more than a year (Jan. 7, 2011 - Feb. 14, 2012) following the resignation of University of Missouri System President Gary D. Forsee. During this period, Owens worked closely with other university general officers, including chancellors of the four campuses, to continue pursuing the strategic priorities and initiatives of the university, emphasizing the preservation and promotion of quality and excellence in institutional core missions. Before coming to the university, Owens was engaged in private legal practice for 26 years with Kansas City based law firm of Stinson Morrison Hecker, LLP (formerly Stinson, Mag & Fizzell). His practice emphasized business litigation, collegiate sports law, contracts and administrative law. Prior to joining the firm, Owens served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. William R. Collinson, United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Missouri. Owens received his bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Missouri- Columbia and his J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in the State of Missouri; United States District Courts for the Western District of Missouri and the District of Kansas; and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Tenth Circuits.

José Padilla joined DePaul University as its Vice President and General Counsel in May, 2005.  He works closely with DePaul’s President, Board of Trustees, Provost, Executive Vice President and other officers.  He reports to the President and belongs to the President’s Cabinet and the university’s Strategic Planning Committee.  He directs an office of seven attorneys. Together they provide tactical and strategic counsel on various legal issues affecting the nation’s largest Catholic university.  Before DePaul, Mr. Padilla worked for Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), a Chicago research university, as an attorney and federal lobbyist. In December, 2010, the Secretary of the United States Department of Education, Arne Duncan, appointed Mr. Padilla to a three year term as a member of the National Board of the Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE”). FIPSE advises the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Postsecondary Education on priorities for improving postsecondary education. Mr. Padilla spent seven years in Washington, D.C.  From 1990 to 1993, he was a lawyer/legislative assistant to the late Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX).  From 1993 to 1997, Mr. Padilla was a senior political appointee in the Clinton Administration, serving as Assistant Commissioner for Congressional and Public Affairs at the United States Customs Service, then a bureau of the United States Treasury Department. Mr. Padilla has also worked on public policy issues affecting higher education. The University of Michigan retained him to represent it before Congress and Hispanic groups with respect to the Gratz and Grutter affirmative action cases in the United States Supreme Court.Mr. Padilla graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1983 and from the University of Toledo in 1980 with a degree in elementary education.  He is licensed in Illinois and the District of Columbia. He is a Director of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and belongs to the Illinois State and American Bar Associations.  He is also a director of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan and the Better Government Association in Chicago. In the October, 2010 edition of Hispanic Business magazine, Mr. Padilla was named one of a 100 influential Hispanics in the nation for 2010.  In 2006, the Latino Law Students Association of the University of Michigan Law School honored Mr. Padilla with the J.T. Canales Award for distinction as a Latino alumnus of the Law School.  

Miles J. Postema is the Vice President and General Counsel at Ferris State University. Prior to joining the University he was a Partner at Tolley, VandenBosch, Walton & Korolewicz, P.C. (now known as Foster Swift) in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he specialized in general business and transactional matters and civil and commercial litigation and served on the firm's management committee. He began his legal career at Warner Norcross & Judd as an associate specializing in general business and commercial litigation.   Mr. Postema serves on the Board of NACUA and as Chair of NACUA's Annual Program Committee.  Mr. Postema has served as the Chair of the Legal Education Committee and has served on NACUA's Publications Committee. He is a past Chairman of the Law Practice Management Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He is a past President of the Mecosta-Osceola County Bar Association and served as the Secretary of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. He has also served on the Publications and Website Advisory Committee of the State Bar of Michigan and as the former Chair of the Communications Committee of the State Bar. Mr. Postema also serves on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Chapter of Association of Corporate Counsel Foundation. In 1994 he was elected as a Fellow of the State Bar of Michigan Foundation.  Mr. Postema also serves as a Trustee on the Board of Education for the Rockford Public Schools where he currently serves as Secretary. He is a frequent presenter for continuing legal education programs on law practice management and other higher education law  topics. Mr. Postema holds a B.B.A from Western Michigan University, a Masters of Science in Taxation from Grand Valley State University and a J.D. from Wayne State University.

M. Kristina Raattama is the General Counsel of Florida International University, a position she assumed in 2010. In this position, Ms. Raattama is responsible for overseeing legal matters for Florida International University and overseeing the University's Compliance and Athletics Compliance Offices. Prior to joining Florida International University, Ms. Raattama served as the Assistant Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in the University of Florida's Office of the Vice President and General Counsel and practiced law in the real estate/commercial finance group of the law firm Bradley Arant, Boult, Cummings, LLP. Before becoming a lawyer, Ms. Raattama worked as a Legislative Assistant to former U.S. Representative Dante B. Fascell (FL) and as a lobbyist/legislative assistant with a private law firm in Washington, D.C., specializing in city government and higher education issues. Ms. Raattama received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Vanderbilt University and her Juris Doctor, with High Honors, from the University of Florida.

Robert F. Roach is the Chief Compliance Officer at New York University and Adjunct Professor at the Stern School of Business. As NYU’s Chief Compliance Officer, Bob is part of NYU’s Office of the President and oversees the University’s Ethics, Compliance and Risk Management programs. At Stern, Bob is a member of the faculty of the Business and Society Program Area, Langone MBA program.   Bob is a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), Certified in Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Bob speaks frequently and has published numerous articles in the areas of ethics, compliance, and investigations.   Prior to joining NYU, Bob served as Chief of Staff at the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI), where he was responsible for NYC’s ethics and corruption prevention programs and conducted investigations into white collar crimes and public corruption. Prior to DOI, Bob served as Assistant District Attorney in the Rackets Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and Section Chief of the Antitrust Bureau of the NY State Attorney General’s Office, where he specialized in the investigation and prosecution of public corruption and white collar crimes. Bob received his law degree from Georgetown University where he was an editor of the law review.

Charles F. Robinson began his tenure as Vice President and General Counsel for the University of California in January 2007. As General Counsel, he is the Chief Legal Officer of the University, providing advice to The Regents, the President and other senior University officials; overseeing a legal staff of 80 attorneys at ten campuses, five medical centers and one national laboratory; and retaining and managing outside counsel. Prior to joining the University, Robinson served as Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the California Independent System Operator Corporation, California's wholesale electric transmission operator, based in Folsom, CA. Prior to that, he served as Assistant General Counsel for Packard Bell in Sacramento, Division Counsel for the Raychem Corporation in Menlo Park, and as a Litigation Partner at Heller Ehrman White and McAuliffe in San Francisco. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and a Juris Doctorate degree from Yale University.  

Charlie Rose is a partner in the Drinker Biddle & Reath's Chicago and Washington, D.C., offices and is the former General Counsel at U.S. Department of Education. He has 29 years of experience advising educational institutions — including colleges and universities, for profit institutions, k-12 school districts and private schools — state government agencies and municipalities; large corporations; and tribal nations on education, employment, labor relations and other matters. Charlie also managed all Department of Education litigation, including Qui Tam cases under the False Claim Act, and collaborated with the Department of Justice in determining the Administration's position and filing of joint amicus curiae briefs. He organized and participated in the department’s first National Conference on Labor-Management Collaboration to Advance Student Achievement. Prior to his appointment by President Barack Obama in May 2009 as General Counsel of the Department of Education, Charlie represented school districts, municipalities and other public and private employers on all facets of labor and employment law, education law, civil rights and pensions. He served as lead negotiator on hundreds of collective bargaining agreements for a wide variety of major public employers in Illinois. Charlie also advised leading business and education organizations on government relations, public policy and legislation including education reform, labor and employment matters, and pension reform. He is active in community service and has taught several graduate and law school courses on labor arbitration, collective bargaining and education law. Charlie is a frequent speaker on education and labor and employment matters before business, education and professional groups.

Mark B. Rotenberg is the General Counsel of the University of Minnesota, and Professor of Practice at the University of Minnesota Law School.  As the University's Chief Legal Officer, Mark is also responsible for the Office of Athletic Compliance and the Office of Records and Information Management.  Prior to coming to the University, Mark was a partner at Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, and served in the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel in Washington, D.C.  Mark also served as law clerk to Judge Patricia M. Wald on the United States Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit.  Mark earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from Brandeis University, and J.D., M.Phil. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University where he was an editor of the Columbia Law Review.  Mark has argued and won cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeals, Minnesota Supreme Court, Minnesota Court of Appeals, and other forums.  He is a member of the American Law Institute, and author of numerous publications.

Frank A. Roth was appointed General Counsel of Lehigh University in 2001. Prior to joining Lehigh, Mr. Roth served from 1996 to 2001 as Vice President and General Counsel of Drexel University, and Secretary of its Board of Trustees. Mr. Roth also served from 1998 to 2001 as Vice President and General Counsel of MCP Hahnemann University, and Secretary of its Board of Trustees. Prior to serving at Drexel, he was Assistant General Counsel and Associate General Counsel at the University of Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1996. From 1983 to 1986, he was an associate attorney with the Philadelphia law firms of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, and Wolf Block Schorr & Solis-Cohen. Mr. Roth received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1983 from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980 from Lehigh University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Roth is admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, the Federal District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He is a member of NACUA, the Education Law Association, and the Northampton, Lehigh County, and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. Since 1994, he has been a lecturer in Higher Education Law at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Mr. Roth is a member of the Board of Directors of Liberty Lutheran Services.

Kathleen Curry Santora has been Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) since February 2001. Before coming to NACUA, she was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE). She previously served in various positions at Georgetown University - as Secretary of the University, as Assistant to the President for External Relations, and as Assistant to the President. For nearly ten years prior to that, from 1982-1986 and again from 1987-1992, Ms. Santora worked for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) - as Vice President for Operations and Counsel; as Executive Director and Counsel for State Relations; as Associate Director of Government Relations and Associate General Counsel; and as its Legislative Representative. In the intervening year 1986-87, she served as Director for Public Policy and External Relations at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).Kathleen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Scranton and a Juris Doctor from the Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and currently serves on the board of the University of Scranton. She previously served on the boards of EDUCAUSE (the association for IT professionals), the American Council on Education and the Academic Search Consultation Service; as a member and Chair of the Washington Higher Education Secretariat Steering Committee (WHES); and as a member of the Council of Higher Education Management Associations (CHEMA) Steering Committee, the Association Mutual Health Insurance Company (AMHIC), and Western New England College.

Dana Stevens Scaduto has been General Counsel for Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania since 2002. From 2002 through 2003, Ms. Scaduto served as joint General Counsel for both Dickinson and Gettysburg Colleges. Prior to becoming in-house counsel, Ms. Scaduto was in private practice for 18 years at the Harrisburg, PA law firm of McNees Wallace & Nurick where she chaired the firm's Education Practice Group and served as outside counsel for several colleges in Central Pennsylvania. Ms. Scaduto is President of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and is serving her second term as a member of the NACUA Board of Directors.  Dana has served on and chaired several NACUA committees, most recently having served as Chair of the Annual Conference Program Committee. Ms. Scaduto has also served as a member or chair of the NACUA Committees on Membership and Member Services, Strategic Planning and Continuing Legal Education (including service as Chair of the Subcommittee on Virtual Education). She has also served on task forces and working groups for the organization.  Dana has attended numerous NACUA conferences and workshops and is a past presenter at several NACUA meetings. She frequently speaks at a variety of other higher education conferences.  Dana is also a member of the Legal Services Review Panel of the National Association of Independent College and University (NAICU) and a member of the Legal Advisory Panel of United Educators.   A graduate of Purdue University and the Indiana University School of Law, Ms. Scaduto is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Cumberland County Bar Associations.        

Marianne Schimelfenig is General Counsel at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. Before coming to Saint Joseph's, she served as General Counsel for Saint Mary's College of California for nearly 10 years. Prior to that, she was in the trial department of the Office of General Counsel for the Regents of the University of California.  Earlier in her career, she was a partner with the Portland, Ore., firm of Spears, Lubersky, Bledsoe, Anderson, Young & Hilliard. A native Pennsylvanian, Schimelfenig earned her bachelor's degree in history from Marywood University in Scranton, a master's in American history from the University of Scranton, and her J.D. from Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law in Portland, Ore.  She has been actively involved with NACUA for 20 years and is the current President. She is an active member of the bar in California, New York, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and Oregon.

Kathy L. Schulz, Esq., is Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Stevens Institute of Technology.  She is responsible for all legal matters on behalf of the University and serves as Secretary to the University's Board of Trustees.  Before joining Stevens, Ms. Schulz served as Associate General Counsel at Yale University from 2008 to 2010, and as Associate General Counsel at New York University from 1994 to 2008.  During her career in higher education, Ms. Schulz has practiced extensively in the areas of non-profit corporate law and taxation, copyright matters including online education, publishing, libraries and archives, patent licensing and other aspects of the technology transfer process, trademark protection, corporate transactions including tax-exempt bond transactions, and international research and educational activities.   From 1987 to 1994, Ms. Schulz practiced at Debevoise & Plimpton in NYC, specializing in corporate finance.  She received her B.A. from Ramapo College of New Jersey, cum laude, in 1983, and her J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University, magna cum laude, in 1987.  She is admitted to practice in Connecticut and New York, and is admitted as in-house counsel in the State of New Jersey.  

Leanne Shank is Washington and Lee’s General Counsel and a member of the President’s Cabinet. Her office represents W&L in all aspects of its operations. The Office of General Counsel is proactive in their work on institutional compliance and risk management. It actively engages W&L’s leadership, including the President, President’s Cabinet and Council, and Board of Trustees on institutional governance matters, including ‘best practices’ in various areas of institutional operations. Leanne’s office also regularly conducts information sessions and workshops for supervisors, deans, faculty and student committees and others in all areas of their authority, including the employment, student judicial matters, federal civil rights laws, environmental, and contracting. Leanne is a summa cum laude graduate of The State University of New York at Oswego and received her JD from The University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill. She is a long- time member of and on the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) where she is currently the Chair of the Investment Committee and Vice Chair of the Finance Committee. She presents and plans various NACUA and Council of Independent Colleges workshops on institutional compliance, IRS governance issues, third party internet sites, department head training, and the recent Higher Education Opportunity Act Amendments, to name a few. She is active in her community having served as the President of the local United Way and the local Free Clinic.

Clyde "Rocky" Sorrell is General Counsel at Montgomery College in Montgomery County, Maryland. Mr. Sorrell is responsible for a wide variety of legal issues at this three campus College that serves over 65,000 credit and non-credit students. In addition to legal issues that generally arise with such an educational institution, Mr. Sorrell has been responsible for several private bond issues for facilities that could not be otherwise funded, has developed a technology park on one of the campuses anchored by a major hospital facility and has supported entrepreneurial activities of the College, both domestic and foreign, including creation of tax- exempt foundations and corporate partnerships. Prior to his appointment at Montgomery College, he was a partner in the District of Columbia office of Hogan & Hartson, LLP, (now Hogan Lovells US LLP) working in corporate, real estate and higher education practice groups of this major international law firm. Prior to his entry into private practice, he was the County Attorney for Montgomery County. Throughout his career, he has been very active in the business community and his community at large, serving as President and/or member of various chambers of commerce, community foundations, music facilities, historic preservation groups and other similar organizations. Sorrell received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia and his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech.

Tomas L. Stafford is General Counsel for the University of Wisconsin System.  He has served in that capacity since October 2010.  Previously, Mr. Stafford was a System Legal Counsel and Senior System Legal Counsel with the UW System Office of General Counsel.  Prior to joining the UW System in 2000, Mr. Stafford was in private practice in St. Paul, Minnesota with the law firm of Winthrop & Weinstine. He also served as counsel to the Higher Education and Commerce Committees of the Minnesota State Senate, and as an Assistant Attorney General with the Minnesota Attorney General's Office where he represented the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. Mr. Stafford holds a B.A. from the University of North Dakota and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Sandhya Subramanian, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, has been at Oberlin College since July 2008. Prior to that, Ms. Subramanian served as chief attorney at the U.S. Department of Education’s Cleveland Office for Civil Rights, where she helped to lead efforts to enforce federal laws barring educational entities from engaging in discrimination on the bases of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, and age.  Previously, Ms. Subramanian was a special litigation counsel in the Special Litigation Section of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C.  She also worked as a policy counsel at the National Partnership for Women & Families from 1998 to 2000, where she coordinated a nationwide initiative to make family and medical leave more affordable and conducted outreach on gender discrimination issues.  She also coauthored an amicus curiae brief successfully arguing that the U.S. Supreme Court should recognize a cause of action for peer sexual harassment under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. She also served as a clerk for Judge Sidney R. Thomas of the U.S. Court Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Billings, MT. Ms. Subramanian graduated from Yale College with a BS, summa cum laude, in chemistry and women’s studies in 1993.  She earned her JD in 1996 at Yale School of Law, where she served as an articles editor on the staff of the Yale Law Journal.  She also coauthored an article, Mrs. Dred Scott that was subsequently published in the Journal in 1997.

Sankar Suryanarayan is University Counsel at Princeton University, and he joined Princeton’s Office of the General Counsel in 2001. He provides advice in a variety of areas, including employment, litigation, student affairs, campus security and athletics. Previously, Sankar worked in American University's Office of General Counsel, and before that as a litigation associate at Chadbourne & Parke. He received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Georgetown University.

Rob Thomas is Vice President, Market Development Group, Corporate Legal Segment of Thomson Reuters. Rob was an architect of Serengeti’s online matter management/e- billing system, the profession’s most widely adopted technology for managing legal work (www.serengetilaw.com). Over 175,000 legal professionals in 180 countries currently use Serengeti to track and report on legal spending, documents, budgets, progress, and results. In 2001, Rob created the annual ACC/Serengeti Managing Outside Counsel Survey. For the past ten years, he has authored the 170+ page survey report, widely regarded as the definitive analysis of the latest trends in managing work with in-house and outside counsel. His articles have appeared in virtually all of the profession’s leading publications, including the ABA’s Law Practice Management, the ACC's Docket, ILTA’s Peer-to-Peer, and European GC. Prior to joining Serengeti, Rob had more than twenty years of diverse experiences as a practicing attorney. He handled complex litigation and corporate finance transactions for the largest commercial law firm in Seattle, and international transactions for a Tokyo law firm. For twelve years, he managed complex litigation and acquisitions for large corporate clients of the Seattle firm of Stokes Lawrence. He served as the firm’s managing partner, and handled national projects involving teams of both in-house and outside counsel. Rob received his undergraduate degree with honors from Princeton University, and his law degree from Stanford Law School, where he was a member of the Stanford Law Review.

Scott Warner is a partner in the Chicago law firm of Franczek Radelet P.C. Scott served as Assistant and Associate General Counsel for Northwestern University for approximately four years prior to entering private practice for a second time in 2006. His current practice focuses on the representation of colleges, universities, academic medical centers, and other non-profit entities in a wide range of litigation and counseling matters. Scott speaks regularly on various higher education issues, and recently co-authored “Managing Violent and Other Troubling Students: The Role of Threat Assessment Teams on Campus” with John H. Dunkle and Zachary B. Silverstein. 34 Journal of College and University Law 585 (2008). He holds both a B.A. and a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan. After graduating from law school in 1995, Scott clerked for the Honorable Jay C. Waldman of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In addition to being a NACUA member, Scott is a member of the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA).

Larry White has worked for thirty years as a lawyer and administrator in the higher education and nonprofit sectors. He is currently Vice President and General Counsel at the University of Delaware, a position he has held since July 2009. At earlier stages in his career he served as Chief Counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Education in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; University Counsel at Georgetown University; Deputy General Counsel to the University of Virginia; counsel to the Board of Regents of the University of Maryland System and Morgan State University, and Assistant Secretary and Associate Counsel at the American Association of University Professors. He has been an adjunct member of the faculties at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Georgetown University, and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Larry served as a NACUA director and officer, and in 2010 was selected as a recipient of the NACUA Distinguished Service Award for extraordinary service to institutions of higher learning over an extended period of time. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his B.A. degree from Harvard University.

David Williams II is Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics Director, General Counsel, University Secretary, and tenured full Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University. He oversees Student Athletics, the fourteen-member General Counsel Office, the Office of Risk Management, the University’s Compliance and Conflict of Interest Committee, and the operations of the University’s Board of Trust. Williams is a member of the State Bars of Tennessee, Michigan, and the District of Columbia. He serves on three NACUA committees and recently completed two terms as a board member. In addition, he is an active member of the American Bar Association, serves on three NCAA Committees and the NCAA General Counsel Advisory Board. He served two three-year terms as a member of the Nashville Branch of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Board and two one-year terms as Chair. He is active in the Nashville community as a board member of many nonprofit organizations. Williams has written, lectured, and participated in many seminars on topics of tax law, sports law, law and education and legal history. He has taught at the Law Schools of the University of Detroit, Capital University, The Ohio State University and Vanderbilt. He directed The Ohio State University Law Program in Oxford, England in 1992 and 1995. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Williams received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Northern Michigan University; a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Detroit; and an LL.M. (Taxation) from New York University.

Nancy S. Williamson is the Vice President and General Counsel at University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Maryland. Ms. Williamson has been with UMUC since December 1999. Prior to joining UMUC, Ms. Williamson was a Claims Counsel at United Educators and a Staff Attorney at Johns Hopkins University. Ms. Williamson is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association. She received her law degree from the University of Baltimore and her Bachelor's degree from American University.
