For New & Recently Appointed In-House General Counsel

Each year between 25 and 50 lawyers are appointed in-house General Counsel at NACUA member institutions. This unique seminar, first introduced at the 2006 Annual Conference, provides members newly or recently appointed as in-house general counsel an opportunity to spend an afternoon with a group of NACUA members with many years of experience serving as their institution’s Chief Legal Officer. Using an informal, roundtable format, seminar leaders will lead discussions on topics such as:
General counsel relationships with board, president, administrators and faculty
Key institutional policies and compliance obligations to examine
General Counsel office organization and budgeting
Time and matter management
Hiring, evaluation and retention of staff
Management of external counsel and fees
Measuring and evaluating performance as General Counsel
Emphasis will be placed on discussion and questions, with many opportunities to exchange ideas and share experiences, challenges and successes. The seminar will conclude with a reception for participants and seminar leaders. Please join us for this unique seminar. It is your opportunity to spend an afternoon with other new and experienced General Counsel and to benefit from the knowledge, insights and experiences of colleagues.
Attendance is limited to 20 participants, newly or recently appointed as the in-house General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer of their institution within the past 3 years.
For Experienced In-House General Counsel
Saturday, June 21, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
This session will utilize the same format as that of the Roundtable for Newly Appointed General Counsel, but will address the needs and interests of members who have served several years as the General Counsel of one or more institutions. Topics and discussions will be based on an advance survey of the registrants. Examples of possible topics include:
Current campus legal issues and trends
Managing board and presidential conflicts and tensions
Selection of external counsel and control of external counsel costs
Hiring and training of new attorneys
Knowledge management
GC office metrics and reporting
The year in review: lessons learned and shared
The session will utilize an informal roundtable format led by veteran NACUA members. Emphasis will be placed on discussion and questions, with many opportunities to exchange ideas and share experiences, challenges and successes. The seminar will conclude with a reception for participants and seminar leaders. Please join us for this Annual Conference session designed especially for experienced General Counsel.
