New! Pre-Conference Roundtable for New and Recently Appointed In-House General Counsel
Saturday, June 24, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Each year between 25 and 50 lawyers are appointed in-house General Counsel at NACUA member institutions. Assuming the many responsibilities of the General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer of a college or university can be a daunting challenge, both for experienced higher education attorneys and those new to the role of in-house university counsel. NACUA is proud to sponsor this new pilot program at the Annual Conference for members beginning their service as institutional general counsel. This unique seminar will provide members newly or recently appointed as in-house general counsel an opportunity to spend an afternoon with a group of NACUA members with many years of experience serving as the chief legal officer for their institutions. Using an informal, roundtable format, seminar leaders will lead discussion on topics such as:

*General Counsel Relationships with Board, President, Administrators and Faculty
*Key Institutional Policies and Compliance Obligations to Examine
*General Counsel Office Organization and Budgeting
*Time and Matter Management
*Hiring, Evaluation and Retention of Staff
*Management of External Counsel and Fees
*Measuring and Evaluating Performance as General Counsel

Emphasis will be placed on discussion and questions, with many opportunities to exchange ideas and share experiences, problems and successes. The seminar will conclude with a cocktail reception for participants and seminar leaders. Attendance is limited to 20 participants, and to attorneys newly or recently appointed as the in-house General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer of their institution.

Please join us for this unique program. It is your opportunity to spend an afternoon with other general counsel and a group of experienced NACUA General Counsel members. Designed in an informal roundtable setting, it’s your chance to ask questions, discuss problems and challenges facing new General Counsel and benefit from the knowledge and insights of experienced colleagues.

Because of it's popularity, we have added another section! Leaders include the following:

Section 01.
* Pamela Bernard, NACUA Past President, Vice President & General Counsel, Duke University
* Thomas Cline, Vice President and General Counsel, Northwestern University
* Marianne Schimelfenig, General Counsel, Saint Mary's College of California
* Greggory K. Spence, Vice President and General Counsel, The New School

Section 02.
* Georgia Yuan, General Counsel and Assistant to the President, Smith College
* Mary Kennard, Vice President and General Counsel, American University
