Chronicles, a periodic newsletter
intended to provide members with information on the 46th Annual Conference, which will be held June 25-28 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile.
Each issue of Chicago
Chronicles will highlight Conference
sessions of note, Chicago attractions and activities, and other important Annual
Conference updates. We also encourage attendees to review the Chicago Events Guide and
Chicago Restaurant Guide,
which contain information on activities recommended by NACUA member attorneys who served
on this years Work Group on Local Arrangements.

David
A. Strauss to Address The New Supreme Court at Conferences Opening
Plenary Session
NACUA is pleased
to have David A. Strauss, Harry N. Wyatt Professor of
Law at the University of Chicago School of Law, as the Opening
Plenary Speaker at NACUAs 46th Annual Conference.
Professor Strauss will share his thoughts on the confirmation process and the
effect of the appointments of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel
Alito, including an examination of cases decided prior to and during the Courts 2005
Term, recent trends in the thinking of the Court and its individual members, and the
dynamics of coalition building and relationships among the Justices. He will also comment on how cases and issues of
higher education are likely to fare in the new Supreme Court.
Professor
Strauss will also speak at a separate conference session Political
Labels and Supreme Court Justices on Monday,
June 26 from 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. The session will include a
discussion of whether traditional terms such as conservative,
liberal, moderate, and activist are truly useful in
understanding how individual Justices understand their role on the Court and how they
decide cases.
Pre-Conference Workshop
for Lawyers New To Higher Education Returns
NACUA is pleased to again offer the Pre-Conference
Workshop for Lawyers New to Higher Education on Saturday, June 24-Sunday, June 25.
This comprehensive and intensive workshop provides lawyers new to higher education law
with an orientation into key areas of practice, including student discipline, copyright
and faculty concerns. Taught by skilled and accomplished NACUA members, this
foundation-building workshop is designed for recent law school graduates, as well as more
experienced new to higher education law. Click here

NEW THIS
YEAR! Pre-Conference Roundtable for Recently
Appointed In-House General Counsel
Offered for the first time at a NACUA Annual Conference, this
program will provide members newly appointed as in-house General Counsel or Chief Legal
Officers with an opportunity to spend an afternoon with experienced NACUA General Counsel
in an informal, roundtable format.
Seminar
leaders will lead discussions on topics such as: relationships with the board, president, administrators, and faculty; key
institutional policies and compliance obligations; office organization and budgeting; time
and matter management; management of external counsel and fees, and measuring and
evaluating performance of General Counsel.
Attendance
at the Roundtable is limited to 20 participants. Participants
must be newly or recently appointed as the in-house General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer
of their institution.

Exhibit at the Field Museum

The Field Museum will host Tutankhamen
and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs! Visitors to the new
exhibition-twice the size of the original 1977 exhibition-will view stunning artifacts
that portray the splendors of life and death in the 18th Dynasty.
