| Screening potential and current
students for past criminal activity has become a topic of concern for many colleges and
universities. Whether due to state law requirements, accrediting or contractual
requirements, highly publicized individual incidents or general liability concerns, many
institutions are examining whether, when and how they should conduct criminal background
checks on all or, more commonly, on a certain portion of their student population.
Pressure to conduct criminal background checks can also come from clinical education
affiliation sites; while the American Association of Medical Colleges Executive Council in
2005 recommended that medical schools require criminal background checks on all accepted
applicants. This program will provide an overview of the issues and considerations surrounding student criminal background checks and provide a framework for analyzing policies and procedures on individual campuses. Topics will include: * Why Criminal Background Checks? Click here to see a detailed program schedule. Panelists include NACUA members Steve Milam, The Milam Firm, Seattle, Washington; and Russell Ford, Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo in Boston, Massachusetts. Heidi Zimmerman, Associate General Counsel for the Tennessee Board of Regents will moderate. Please join them for this timely and informative program. The panelists will also be participating in a Discussion Group on Student Criminal Background Checks at the NACUA Annual Conference in Chicago. |
