Screening potential and current students for past criminal activity has become a topic of concern for many colleges and universities. Whether due to state law requirements, accrediting or contractual requirements, highly publicized individual incidents or general liability concerns, many institutions are examining whether, when and how they should conduct criminal background checks on all or, more commonly, on a certain portion of their student population. Pressure to conduct criminal background checks can also come from clinical education affiliation sites; while the American Association of Medical Colleges Executive Council in 2005 recommended that medical schools require criminal background checks on all accepted applicants.

This program will provide an overview of the issues and considerations surrounding student criminal background checks and provide a framework for analyzing policies and procedures on individual campuses. Topics will include:

* Why Criminal Background Checks?
* Using Pre-Admission Inquiries of Student Criminal Activity
* Required Criminal Background Checks
* Types of Criminal Background Checks
* When, How and By Whom are Criminal Background Checks Conducted?
* Handling Criminal Background Check Information
