On June 23 the U.S. Supreme Court issued its long-awaited decisions in the cases challenging the University of Michigan's consideration of race as a factor in student admissions to the university's law school and to its undergraduate school. The Court's decisions in Grutter v. Bollinger et al. and Gratz et al. v. Bollinger et al. answered many of the questions still remaining after the Court's 1978 Bakke decision.

This program will review the decisions and their implications for the use of race-conscious factors in college and university admissions and related academic programs. The required and recommended elements of constitutional race-conscious admissions programs after these important decisions will be described, and remaining and future issues discussed. The program will include time for questions from members of the program audience. In particular the program will cover:

BD10337_.GIF (240 bytes) Requirements for Race-Conscious Admissions Programs After Grutter and Gratz

BD10337_.GIF (240 bytes) What's Next? Implications Beyond College and University Admissions and Future Challenges

Panelists will include NACUA members Marvin Krislov and Jonathan Alger of the University of Michigan, Elizabeth Meers of Hogan & Hartson, and Michael Madden of Bennett, Bigelow and Leedom. Click on the "schedule" above for a detailed description of the program.

This program will be of interest to any members representing institutions that currently have or are considering the use race-based factors in admissions procedures, and to members interested in the general implications of the court's decisions for judicial review of the use of racial classifications in higher education and elsewhere.
