On September 4, 1997, President Atkinson issued a new University of California Patent Policy that will be effective October 1, 1997. The principal change to the policy involves a new formula for the distribution of royalty income generated by licensed inventions as explained in the Summary of Changes. The President also transmitted a new Patent Acknowledgment form to be signed by all new employees and visitors as of October 1st. This form replaces the University Patent Agreement.
A document entitled Questions and Answers Regarding the University of California Patent Policy has been prepared to help explain the development and application of the new Patent Policy and Patent Acknowledgment to faculty and other employees. Comparison of UC Royalty Distribution Formulas compares the royalty income distribution formulas for the November 1985 policy, the April 1990 policy (now rescinded), and the new policy. Finally, Royalty Distribution Formulas of Other Universities provides information on royalty-sharing arrangements in effect at other universities that have active technology transfer programs.
The new Patent Acknowledgment form is being printed and will be distributed through the normal University forms distribution channels. It should be available by the effective date.
If you have questions or concerns about the implementation of the new Patent Policy, please contact your campus or laboratory Patent Coordinator.
Sincerely,
Joe Acanfora
Associate Director
