By Nancy E. Tribbensee
Because of its complexity and enormity, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (more commonly known as "FERPA") has, at one time or another, frustrated and confounded most members of the higher education community. This pamphlet offers a general overview of FERPA for higher education administrators, attorneys, faculty, students, and staff who have or who need only a limited knowledge of student records law. Offered in an easy-to-understand question-and-answer format, the information focuses on such areas as directory information; which records are and are not protected by FERPA; when can students inspect and review their education records; use of and access to student information by faculty and campus officials; and disclosure of student information to persons other than the student. © NACUA, 2003; 16 pages.
