FY 2007-2008
The Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors , composed of the chief executive officers of Texas' 50 publicly-supported general academic universities, system offices, and health-related institutions, requested a NACUA member speaker for its one-day conference on preventing and managing conflict of interest in higher education. The intended audience is higher education administrators and the conference is scheduled to be held in late April. The Council provides a forum for discussing the mutual needs, concerns and issues facing public universities in Texas and encourages inter-institutional cooperation in meeting the higher education goals of the State.
Along with two other NACUA members, NACUA’s CEO Kathleen Santora will speak on July 14, 2008 in Chicago, Illinois at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the National Association of College and University Business Officers during a concurrent session entitled “Legal Update: College and University Conflicts of Interest One Year Later.”
EDUCAUSE has hosted several regional half-day seminars entitled “Essential Privacy Practices for Academic Organizations,” in cooperation with NACUA. The most recent sessions featuring NACUA member speakers were held March 10 in Providence, Rhode Island and March 17, in Chicago, Illinois. The sessions highlighted resources, tools, and best practices for advancing a privacy agenda in the academy and provided an overview of the legal requirements for privacy at educational institutions.
In February, CEO Kathleen Curry Santora co-presented, with John Walda, President of NACUBO, on conflicts of interest issues at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. NAICU represents the public policy interests of presidents of private colleges and universities.
The Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas asked NACUA to recommend a member speaker to present at their president’s meeting on conflicts of interest. ICUT’s mission is to help policymakers recognize the importance and value of the independent sector of higher education in Texas by successfully articulating the sector's needs and aspirations.
On Friday, April 25, 2008, NACUA presented a panel on legal issues in achieving diversity on campus at the 34th Annual AAAA National Conference. The American Association for Affirmative Action is the association of professionals managing affirmative action, equal opportunity, diversity and other human resource programs.
NACUA Collaborates with ASJA
The Association for Student Judicial Affairs hosted a Web Conference entitled Search Me? Legal Issues in Residence Hall Searches, on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 3:00pm ET, in collaboration with NACUA. The conference focused on how institutions can balance students’ privacy rights with an institution’s safety concerns. NACUA member attorney Daryl J. Lapp, partner in the Boston office of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP, served as an instructor. To view more information about this program, please visit its website:

NACUA has been asked to recommend a member to speak regarding strategies for pipelining students and graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities into law practice and other highly competitive occupations at NAFEO’s 33rd National Conference in Washington, DC. The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education’s mission is to champion the interests of historically black colleges and universities and predominantly black institutions with the executive, legislative, regulatory and judicial branches of federal and state government and with corporations, foundations, associations and non-governmental organizations.
NACUA is one of several partners in a new national campus safety and security project initiative launched by NACUBO, which will serve to comprehensively assess the wide-ranging risks common to all institutions and which will explore key safety and security threats and deliver information to help campuses prepare.
