Theresa J. Colecchia is Associate General Counsel for the University of Pittsburgh, where she is responsible primarily for technology transfer, research contract matters, human subject research and the Institutional Review Board, animal subject research and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and conflicts of interest. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 and her B.S. in Applied Mathematics, magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1986. Prior to joining the legal counsel’s office, Ms. Colecchia was in-house counsel for Allegheny Energy, an associate with the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, and a clerk for the Hon. Richard L. Nygaard of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Ms. Colecchia has been a member of NACUA since 1998, and has served on the Committee on Annual Program for the past three years. For two of those years, she served as a Working Group Co-Leader for the Research and Intellectual Property section. She has been a frequent speaker at NACUA Annual Conferences and CLE workshops on issues relating to sponsored research, intellectual property, and human subject research, and is the editor of the NACUA compendium, Legal Issues in Sponsored Research Programs: From Contracting to Compliance, published in June 2005.

NACUA is pleased to recognize Theresa Colecchia as this year’s recipient of the First Decade Award. Her knowledge of issues related to sponsored research has made her a “go to” person among her colleagues both within and outside NACUA. She always gives generously of her time and expertise to those who seek her counsel and advice, and is considered by many to be in the forefront of her field. These attributes, combined with her active service to NACUA, make her an ideal recipient of this award.
