Fellows of the Association Award

Arthur M. Sussman - 2001

Until his resignation earlier this Spring to become Vice President and Secretary of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Arthur M. Sussman served for more than 21 years as General Counsel and Vice President for Administration and Vice President for Argonne National Laboratory at the University of Chicago. During his tenure, Mr. Sussman worked with three University presidents, managing all aspects of the University’s legal activities, overseeing the operations of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and University Dean of Students Office. For many years, he was also responsible for all the operations of Argonne National Laboratory and its 4,000 employees.

Mr. Sussman’s contributions to NACUA over nearly as many years have been equally as impressive. He was a member of the Board of Directors from 1988-1991 and has spoken at numerous CLE workshops and Annual Conferences. He has served on the Honors and Awards Committee, the Annual Conference Program Committee, and the Committees on Member Services, Professional Development, National Office, and Board Operations (for which he was Chair in 1990-1991). He also was a member of the Ethics Project from 1991-1992. Those who know him and who have had the honor of working with him or hearing him as a speaker know that he has always given graciously of his time, experience and expertise.

NACUA is pleased to honor Mr. Sussman as a Fellow of the Association in recognition of and appreciation for his many contributions to NACUA, to the University of Chicago, to higher education generally, and to the practice of law.
