NACUA's Distinguished Service Award

Mary Elizabeth Kurz - 2002

Mary Beth Kurz has been Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of North Carolina State University since 2000. Prior to that, she was Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of The Texas A&M University System; General Counsel and Vice President for Legal Affairs at Michigan State University; Legal Counsel to the University of Montana; and Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland assigned to represent the University of Maryland. She received a B.A. degree Magna Cum Laude from Marywood College and a J.D. with Honors from The University of Maryland School of Law.

Ms. Kurz attended her first NACUA conference in 1980, and has attended every single Annual Conference and countless CLE workshops since then. Her involvement in all other areas of the Association’s work has been equally as extensive and distinguished. She has been a member of virtually every committee, serving as Chair of the CLE Committee from 1986-1989 and as Co-Chair in 1999-2000; as Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee (1994-1995); Nominations and Elections Committee (1993-1994); Annual Program Committee (1991-1992); and Site Selection Committee (1985-1986).

Mary Beth Kurz’s service both to NACUA and to higher education have been extraordinary. She is regarded by her colleagues and peers as a leader in the truest sense of the word. NACUA is honored to present her with the 2002 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her contributions and the distinction she has brought to our profession over many years.
