NACUA's Life Membership Award

Melany Stinson Newby - 2007

Melany Stinson Newby has been a member of NACUA for nearly 30 years. From 1978-1989, she was Director of Legal Advisory Services and Contracting Officer at the University of Cincinnati and from 1989-2006, she was Vice Chancellor for Legal and Executive Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms. Newby received her B.A. from The Ohio State University and her J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Prior to joining the University of Cincinnati’s legal counsel’s office, she was an Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Cincinnati. She also served for five years as Chair of the Cincinnati Complaints Resolution Hearing Board, Employment and Training Division.

Ms. Newby was a member-at-large of the NACUA Board of Directors from 1984-1987 and served as Board Secretary from 1988-1992. She also has served on nearly every NACUA committee, including Co-Chair of the Institute Task Force, 1994-1995; Chair of the Publications Committee, 1985-1987; Chair of the Membership Committee, 1981-1983, and Chair of the Editorial Board of West’s Education Law Reporter, Higher Education Edition, 1985-1987. Among her many contributions to NACUA was her instrumental role in the implementation and development of the NACUA publications program.

Melany Newby has been a long, valued, and valuable member of NACUA and a generous contributor to many of its services and activities. She has been a mentor to many, a positive role model for newcomers to the profession, and the epitome of collegiality. NACUA is pleased to recognize her accomplishments and achievements, and to bestow on her Life Membership in the Association.
