NACUA's Life Membership Award

James E. Holst - 2006

James Holst retires as General Counsel for the University of California in June 2006, having served in that position for 21 years. He first joined the Office of the General Counsel in 1964, became an Associate Counsel in January 1974, Chief Associate Counsel in June 1974, Deputy General Counsel in 1984, and General Counsel in 1985. He graduated with honors in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley and received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall).

Mr. Holst’s involvement in NACUA spans nearly as long as his tenure at the University of California. He joined the Association in 1970, and his first volunteer position was on the 1978-1979 Committee on Arrangements. Since then, he served on virtually every NACUA committee and myriad task forces. He was Chair of the Committee on Arrangements for Annual Conference in 1992-1993, and served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Articles and Bylaws in 1994-1995 and the Committee on Nominations and Elections in 2001-2002. He was a member of the NACUA Board of Directors from 1987-1990.

Mr. Holst has been a frequent speaker at Annual Conferences and CLE Workshops, and he has attended virtually every Annual Conference since 1985. Those who know Jim know that he has been a generous and gracious contributor to NACUA. We are pleased to recognize both those contributions and the many years of service that he has given to the University of California, by bestowing on him Life Membership in the Association.
