Fellows of the Association Award

Martin Michaelson - 2000

Mr. Michaelson is a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Hogan and Hartson, where he represents colleges and universities, higher education associations, medical centers, research institutes, and other clients located throughout the United States. He first joined Hogan and Hartson in 1973, five years after graduating from Boston College Law School, where he was the recipient of the American Trial Lawyers Association Prize, given to the outstanding advocate in the National Moot Court Competition. His practice at that time focused on federal regulatory matters, including counseling, litigation, and legislative work. Prior to joining Hogan and Hartson, Mr. Michaelson was in private practice in New York City and later served as Legislative Assistant to Congressman Robert Drinan.

Mr. Michaelson left Hogan and Hartson in 1989 to join the General Counsel’s office at Harvard University, serving first as University Counsel and then as Deputy General Counsel. He returned to the law firm in 1989 and, since then, has given generously of his time and expertise, not just to NACUA, but to other higher education associations, as well. He has spoken and written widely on legal risk management and regulation of colleges and universities. His views have been published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, and elsewhere. He is currently a consulting editor of Trusteeship magazine, for which he also writes the Legal [Standpoint] column.

Mr. Michaelson’s contributions to NACUA have been extensive. He has been a member of the Annual Conference Program Committee, the Ad-hoc Committee on Professional Relations, the Publications Committee, and the Editorial Board of The Journal of College and University Law. In 1998-1999, he chaired the Task Force on the Role of Private Practitioners. He has also been a frequent speaker at NACUA CLE workshops and Annual Conferences.

NACUA is pleased to bestow the honor of Fellow on Martin Michaelson in recognition of his generous and on-going contributions to higher education, to the profession, and to the Association.
